Long Ball Powers Nebraska To 8-4 Win Over Texas Tech
April 27, 2003 LUBBOCK, Texas - No. 6 Nebraska scored five runs on three home runs to defeat Texas Tech 8-4 on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,091 fans at Dan Law Field. The win gives Nebraska the series 2-1. Nebraska center fielder Jeff Leise gave the Huskers a 2-0 lead in the third inning when he belted a two-run home run over the right field wall. Texas Tech (25-20; 7-13) battled back in the bottom half of the third when junior first baseman Doug Beck hit a solo home run over the left-center field wall. Junior Christian Colonel tied the game with an infield roller allowing Scooter Jordan to score from third.
Tech shortstop T.J. Bruce committed a costly defensive fielding error with one out in the sixth that set up a two-out, two-run home run by Matt Wells that gave Nebraska 5-3 lead.
Matt Hopper picked up a two-run homer in the seventh and Joe Simokaitis hit his first career home run in the eighth to account for the final three Husker runs. Texas Tech scored in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Cody Fuller that plated Brent Fossum. Fossum led off the inning with a double to left-center. Steve Gooch suffered the loss for Texas Tech as he fell to 4-4 after giving up three earned runs in six innings. Steve Hale (2-0) earned the win for Nebraska in relief as he pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing one earned run on three hits. Texas Tech hits the road for four games this week beginning with a single game against the New Mexico Lobos on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. (CT). |
