April 27, 2004
LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior right-hander John Milton pitched seven stellar innings and junior shortstop Cameron Blair picked up his third grand slam of the season as No. 25 Texas Tech defeated New Mexico 10-1 on Tuesday night at Dan Law Field. The win improves Texas Tech to 28-13 overall while New Mexico falls to 17-21-1. The Red Raiders wrapped up a nine-game homestand in which they finished 8-1 with their only loss coming to then No. 13 Oklahoma on Friday night. Junior shortstop Cameron Blair gave the Red Raiders a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when he connected on his third grand slam of the season. New Mexico starter Petr Pacas walked the bases loaded and then Blair sent the four-run homer over the left field bullpen. The home run was his seventh of the season. Texas Tech pushed its lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth as the Red Raiders hit two more home runs this time by Jose Delgado and Matthew Coco. Both home runs were two run shots as Lobo reliever Mike Smith walked the batter before both Delgado and Coco. New Mexico scored its only run of the game in the top of the sixth on two miscues by the Texas Tech defense. Dusty Young reached in the leadoff at-bat on a fielding error by second baseman Delgado and later scored on a throwing error by Blair. Matthew Coco picked up his second home run of the game in the bottom of the eighth when he delivered a solo dinger over the left field fence. Junior center fielder Michael Mask plated the final run of the game when he hit an RBI double to left field that plated pinch runner Marcus Lewis. John Milton (3-0) picked up the win for Texas Tech as he allowed just three hits and no earned runs in seven innings of work. Petr Pacas (1-3) suffered the loss for New Mexico as he gave up four earned runs on five hits in four innings of work.
Texas Tech returns to action this weekend as the Red Raiders will take on the Kansas Jayhawks in a three-game series at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kan. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m.
