LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior Christian Colonel went 5-for-6 with five RBI to lead the Texas Tech Red Raiders to a 20-9 win over the Wofford Terriers in non-conference baseball action on Thursday night at Dan Law Field.

Wofford (8-36) jumped out to 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Tech starter walked in a run after surrendering one hit and three walks in the inning.

Texas Tech (27-23) regained the lead in the bottom of the first when Brent Fossum reached on a leadoff single and Scooter Jordan was issued a walk on four pitches. Christian Colonel put Tech on the board with his sixth home run of the year when he belted a three-run shot over the left field wall.

Tech's lead didn't last long as the Terriers put up two runs in the top of the second as Wofford hit Fouts again for three hits and he issued one walk.

The Red Raiders ran away with the game in the bottom of the second as Tech scored nine runs in the inning marking the second time this season that Tech has scored nine runs in one inning. Tech put up nine against Nebraska in the sixth inning back on April 25. Tech got seven hits in the inning and Christian Colonel, Josh Haney and Doug Beck each picked up two RBI.

Tech added five more runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 17-7 lead. Wofford would pull within eight by scoring two in the seventh.

Evan Shahak pushed his home run total to seven in the bottom of the eighth when he hit a two-run home run to give Tech the 20-9 lead.

Steven Thomas earned the win in relief for Texas Tech as he pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits. The win marked his first of the season. Jesse Cole suffered the loss for Wofford as he allowed five hits and nine earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

 

 

Texas Tech and Wofford will play game-two of the series at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Dan Law Field.
