Colonel, Fouts Pace Texas Tech To 20-10 Win Over Wofford
May 9, 2003 LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior Christian Colonel and Sophomore Cooper Fouts each picked up five RBI and Colonel delivered five hits for the second game in a row as Texas Tech pounded Wofford 20-10 on Friday night at Dan Law Field. Wofford (8-37) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third as the Terriers mounted the four-run rally with two outs in the inning. Wofford picked up seven consecutive hits of Tech starter Dusty Buck to make up the four runs.
Texas Tech (28-23) immediately responded in the bottom half of the third as Tech regained the lead by scoring six runs on five hits. Sophomore Catcher Cooper Fouts put the first two runs on the board when he hit his first career home run, a two-run shot that went over the left field wall.
Wofford pulled within one by scoring a single run in the top of the fifth as Jesse Cole scored Steve Casey with a sacrifice fly to center field. The Red Raiders blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth as Tech plated six runs on six hits and one Wofford defensive error. Cody Fuller picked up a three-RBI triple in the inning as part of a 2-for-6 day at the plate with four RBI. Texas Tech plated seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth and two in the bottom of the eighth to score 20 runs in back-to-back games for the first time since 1997 when Tech beat Grand Canyon 20-8 and 21-3. Dusty Buck (4-3) earned the win for Texas Tech as he pitched seven innings allowing 13 hits, five earned runs and struckout five. Andrew Hewitt (0-1) suffered the loss for Wofford as he surrendered six earned runs and seven hits through 2 2/3 innings. Texas Tech will go for its first three-game sweep tomorrow night as the Red Raiders host Wofford at 7 p.m. at Dan Law Field. Tech's last sweep came earlier this season against San Diego. |
