Baseball Falls to Rice, 15-11
May 30, 1999
LUBBOCK (AP) - Rice's 10 run third inning was too much for Texas Tech as the Owl's defeated the Red Raiders 15-11 to advance to next week's NCAA super regionals. The Owl's (56-12) forced a second championship game with Texas Tech (42-17) by defeating the Red Raiders 3-1 on a two run homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning. Rice started off the game with a two run second inning and added 10 more runs in the third to take an early 12-0 advantage and what seemed like a blowout of the home team Texas Tech. But, the Red Raiders didn't die easily by recording 11 straight runs to bring the game within four. It was a night of many pitchers, as both team accounted for nine pitching changes on the evening but the biggest change came for Rice in the bottom of the ninth with two Tech runners on base and one out, the Owl's brought in ace Mario Ramos for the save. "That is as tough as it gets," said Rice Head Coach Wayne Graham. "Our kids did a great job with the bats early and Mario Ramos did it for us again on the mound." Both teams accounted for 31 hits in the offensive explosion and five errors.
