LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech junior right-handed pitcher Trey Masek was named to the College Baseball Daily Preseason Top 100 College Baseball Players list at No. 61, the publication announced this weekend.
Masek (Giddings, Texas) becomes the fifth Red Raider to land on the "Top 100 Players" list since 2010 and is the second highest Tech pitcher (Chad Bettis - No. 24 in 2010) to receive the honor.
Now in his third year with the Red Raiders, Masek has made 34 career appearances (17 starts) with a 7-8 record, 4.12 ERA and 120.0 innings pitched with 79 strikeouts. He was the Red Raiders' Saturday starter as a freshman in 2011 and last season pitched in a relief role early in the year and later started on the weekends.
Masek is coming off a standout summer season in the prestigious Cape Cod League where he was the only Big 12 pitcher named an all-star while ranking fifth in the league with 47 strikeouts.
Masek has been recently projected as the No. 22 Collegiate Major League Baseball Draft Prospect by Baseball America and he was named the No. 3 draft prospect from the state of Texas by Perfect Game.
He enters his junior season ranked seventh in career school history with 14 starts in Big 12 play. Last year he made 18 appearances (6 starts) with a 3.40 ERA with two wins, 53.0 innings pitched and 46 strikeouts while opponents batted .244.
College Baseball Daily's countdown will continue until Opening Day where they continue listing the top players in the country. Last season the Red Raiders had two players (CF Barrett Barnes - No. 19; RHP John Neely - No. 88) that made the list.
