LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech pitcher Monty Ward was selected as one of five Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball National Players of the Week, Collegiate Baseball announced Monday morning. Each week Collegiate Baseball picks several players who stood out as national players of the week.

The others included Rice pitcher Jeff Nichols (threw no-hitter vs. Hawaii), LSU first baseman Eddie Furniss (hit 6 home runs and went 12-22 with 14 RBI), Texas A&M pitcher Ryan Rupe (1-hitter vs. Oklahoma State) and Arizona outfielder Jason Hendricks (went 4-5 with 8 RBI in one game, three in series vs. UCLA).

Ward, a righthanded junior, struck out a career high 18 batters in 29 batters faced in a nine inning complete game shutout of Lindenwood on Saturday March 14.

What's more, he only walked on batter and allowed only two singles on the day. He tied a Texas Tech strikeout game record with 18, tying Buddy Hamptons' record set on April 27, 1968.
