At-Bat For The Cure Game Set For May 16
May 9, 2009
MANHATTAN, Kan. - Texas Tech Baseball fans are urged to come out to the ballpark on Saturday, May 16 as the Red Raiders will team up with the Susan G. Komen For The Cure for the At-Bat For The Cure Game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Red Raider Baseball began its partnership with the Susan G. Komen For The Cure this Fall as the squad took part in the annual Race For The Cure event on the streets of downtown Lubbock. The team and staff served as race volunteers and are eager to host its own fundraiser for the organization. "I think our players got a great sense of where their priorities in life should be while working the race in the fall," said Texas Tech Head Coach Dan Spencer. "The guys really enjoyed being around those women and coming to grips with the journey that life has taken them on. It was great for them to see that life isn't always easy but it can be extremely rewarding when you work hard and you are a fighter. Breast cancer is a disease that impacts so many people and if we all do our part we can help end it." For the game, Texas Tech players and coaches will wear a commemorative pink hat that is designed to pay tribute to victims, survivors and those currently battling breast cancer. The hats will be auctioned off individually over the course of the game with the proceeds going directly to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Auction tables will be set up on the main concourse and bidding will begin one hour prior to first pitch. Komen volunteers will have information booths set up outside the home plate entrance to Dan Law Field and will be taking monetary donations. Several recognitions will take place over the course of the game including a special first pitch delivered by someone very close to the Red Raider baseball program. Breast cancer survivors who plan on attending the game are urged to contact Ashley Hamm at (806) 698-1900 (ext. 5). Ticket information can be obtained by logging on to www.texastech.com or by calling the Texas Tech Athletics Ticket Office at (806) 742-TECH.
About Susan G. Komen Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. That concern for others continued even as Susan neared the end of her fight. Moved by Susan's compassion for others and committed to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. That promise is now Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since inception in 1982. As the world's largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, we're working together to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure®, and generous contributions from our partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, we have become the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
