Texas Tech Blasts Baylor

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Texas Tech won its second Big 12 Conference Tournament game in a row with an 11-4 victory against Baylor Friday at the Southwestern Bell Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Okla. The victory puts Tech (41-17) in the drivers' seat for the Big 12 Conference championship with two victories. Each of the other schools still remaining- Baylor, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State- have one loss apiece in the two-loss double elimination tournament.

Texas Tech jumped out to a comfortable 8-1 lead after four innings and held on to defeat the Bears 11-4.

Josh Bard's first inning three-run home run put Texas Tech up 3-0 after one. Tech added two more in the second when Keith Ginter lofted one over the centerfield wall. The Red Raiders scored another run in the third on a Kevin Jordan RBI single. Ryan Ruiz put Tech up 8-1 with a two-RBI double.

Baylor (40-17-1) came back with a run in the fifth inning and two runs in the seventh. The Bears had the bases loaded in the seventh inning but relievers Zach Stewart and Brad Ralston struck out the final two batters for the final two outs.

Texas Tech also did the job on the mound. Starter Monty Ward (6-4) pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed 11 hits, four runs (three ER). He struck out nine batters in 34 batters faced and walked three batters. Cade Allison relieved Ward and went 2/3 innings and allowed three hits, Zach Stewart entered the game for a batter and struck him out with the bases loaded then Texas Tech short relief man Brad Ralston pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, struck out three for his fourth save oft the season.

Ginter finished the day 2-3 with three runs, two RBI and two bases on balls, Brennan Burns had a career high four hits (4-5 performance) with an RBI and two runs scored, Jason Huth went 2-3 with three runs and an RBI and Ryan Ruiz finished 2-5 with three RBI.

*Texas Tech is on an eight-game winning streak.

*Brennan Burns set a career high in hits with four.

*With his nine strikeouts, starter Monty Ward broke the Texas Tech single season strikeout record. He has 139 on the season and surpassed Jason Gooding's total of 137 strikeouts set last year in 1997. Ward also joined the prestigious Texas Tech 20+ career wins club with the victory.

*Josh Bard extended his hitting streak to eight games, Ryan Ruiz extended his hitting streak to 10 games and Jason Landreth extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

*Josh Bard's home run in the first inning was his first home run in 28 at-bats and 31 plate appearances.

*Mark Austry's error was his first error in 236 fielding attempts and first in 23 games.
