Texas Tech vs. North Carolina Quotes & Notes

May 21, 1998

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Texas Tech vs North CarolinaAtlantic I Regional - Game 1

Head Coach Larry Hays -- (On Shane Wright) "It was a typical performance. It is great pitching weather and he took advantage of it. I was mostly concerned about our defense. We played pathetic defense and got ourselves into some spots and Shane got us out of it."

Sophomore Catcher Josh Bard -- (On 8th inning home run) "I was just excited to get a right hander in there and I was glad to get a pitch to hit. I was really trying to wait on it and get my pitch. He threw it out over the plate where I like it."

Junior Pitcher Shane Wright -- "I've had it written on my hat since last year 'End with a win - Omaha.' I don't just want to get there, I want to win. That's why I play college baseball. I love pitching in (the heat). My ball moved a lot more today. I didn't necessarily have the nasty stuff, but I was hitting most of my spots today."

Texas Tech Notes* Shane Wright broke the school record for innings pitched in a season. He now has 152.2 innings pitched to pass the mark of 147.1 set by Mark Brandenburg in 1992.

* Wright threw his eighth-straight complete game. He breaks the Texas Tech season complete game record (13) and career complete game record (17). He also earned his 24th career win.

* Jason Landreth extended his hitting streak to 14 games.

* Josh Bard extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Head Coach Mike Roberts -- "I did a poor job of managing today. I told Ryan (Snare) that he would only go three to five innings since he hadn't pitched that long lately. He was over 100 pitches and I was ready to pull him a few pitches before the home run. I thought our relief pitching would hold up but they couldn't come though. I apologized to the kids after the game because I thought I did a poor job of managing."

Sophomore Shortstop Brian Roberts -- (On Texas Tech pitcher Shane Wright) "He kept everybody off balance. He didn't leave any balls over the plate and everything was running away. He did a heck of a job. Texas Tech showed today you have to win in the late innings and we haven't been doing that lately."

Junior pitcher Corey Richardson -- (On giving up home run to Bard) "The mistake was falling behind 1-0. I left the next pitch out over the plate and he hit it pretty well. If I could do it again, I'd probably throw the same pitch and just throw farther outside."

North Carolina Notes

* In 12.2 innings pitched at Mark Light Stadium this season, Ryan Snare has registered 18 strikeouts.
