Baseball Players Earn National Honors

May 29, 1998

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech pitcher Shane Wright (Topeka, Kansas/Hayden H.S.) was selected to two more All America teams Friday. The junior righthander was named to The Sporting News All America Second Team and the Baseball America All America Third Team. The honors make Wright a consensus All America as he was named to the All America First Team sponsored by TPX/Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball magazine and Second Team All America by USA Baseball Weekly.

Texas Tech sophomore catcher Josh Bard was also named to Baseball America's All America Third Team with Wright.

Wright finished the season at 14-1 with a 2.71 earned run average. He completed 13 games and walked only 20 batters and struck out 116 in 152 2/3 innings. Bard hit .383 (101-264) in 60 games and had 22 doubles, 17 home runs and 71 RBI from his catcher position. Both were named as consensus All Big 12 Conference and are expected to return to Texas Tech next season.

Both Bard and Wright will attend the USA Baseball trials June 1 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz. They are two of 44 players invited to tryout for the 1998 USA Baseball Team.
