Texas Tech junior outfielder Miles Durham was selected in the fifth round (138th pick overall) Monday afternoon by the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball's 2000 First-Year Player Draft. The Abliene, Texas, native was the only Red Raider taken during the first day of the two-day draft. Major League Baseball teams completed 20 of the 50 rounds (picks 1-610) on Monday. The final 30 rounds (picks 611-1510) of the draft will be tomorrow.

Durham is the 10th player in Texas Tech history to be selected in the top five rounds. He follows Josh Bard, who was picked in the third round by Colorado last year, and 1998 fourth-round pick Monty Ward. Durham was also a sixth-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1997 draft.

Despite playing in just 21 games in 2000, the left-handed hitting outfielder batted .343 (23-67) and was 6-for-7 in stolen base attempts. He is tied for 14th in school history with 36 career stolen bases.
