LUBBOCK, Texas - The third Texas Tech Red Raider was taken in the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft when redshirt-junior left-handed pitcher Zach Fowler (Texarkana, Texas) was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 34th round (1,025th overall) Wednesday afternoon.

Fowler was the second Tech player taken on Wednesday (Nick Popescu - 33rd round, Atlanta Braves) and third overall in this year's draft as shortstop Kelby Tomlinson was drafted in the 12th round yesterday by the San Francisco Giants.

Fowler is the 11th Red Raider pitcher to be drafted during head coach Dan Spencer's time with the program. He is the seventh Tech left-handed pitcher to be drafted since 2006.

An Academic All-Big 12 first team selection, Fowler made 23 appearances - all relief - with a 1-1 record and 3.38 ERA in 16.0 innings with 11 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. Fowler recorded 11 outings during Big 12 play tallying a 3.86 ERA.

He made 13 scoreless appearances and had at least one strikeout in 10 outings. In addition, Fowler was among team leaders with a 1.23 ERA in nine appearances in road/neutral site games.
