von Schamann pitched seven scoreless innings on Friday allowing three hits with three strikeouts without allowing a walk to win his sixth game
The Texas Tech baseball program started the 2014 Major League Baseball season with several former players on MLB rosters and on Minor League Baseball teams trying to reach the big leagues.
Currently, there are 25 former Texas Tech players who are playing with an MLB organization as a player. Throughout the remainder of the summer, Texas Tech athletics communications will provide weekly updates on former Red Raiders competing at the major league and minor league level.
AJ Ramos (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins)
Ramos made two relief outings last week - both at home - against the Nationals (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO and against the Reds where he struck out three in a scoreless innings. Ramos is 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in 44 relief outings with 43.0 innings, 49 strikeouts and 31 walks allowed. Ramos pitched four years at Tech, 2006-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 21st round by the Florida Marlins.
Roger Kieschnick (OF -Arizona Diamondbacks)
Kieschnick was recalled to the big leagues on the trade deadline - July 31 - and has since made three pinch-hitting appearances while going 0-for-1 in all three games the past three days. He has played in 22 games with the D-Backs this season with a .188 (6-for-32) batting average with two runs, a double and a home run with two RBI. Kieschnick was a three-year starter for Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the San Francisco Giants.
Chad Bettis (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Triple-A - Colorado Springs Sky Sox)
Bettis was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs last week. He has been in both Triple-A and the big leagues off and on for the entire 2014 season. Bettis is 2-2 in 15 relief outings in Triple-A with a 1.72 ERA with three saves, 31.1 innings and has posted 32 strikeouts with 12 walks allowed. Bettis pitched three seasons at Tech, 2008-2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the second round by the Colorado Rockies.
Bobby Doran (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Triple-A - Charlotte Knights)
Doran, who has 34 career minor league wins, was part of a trade this season going from the Houston Astros organization to the Chicago White Sox - where he joined Triple-A Charlotte. Doran took a no decision during his only start this past week going three scoreless innings allowing one hit with two strikeouts and a walk allowed. He is 4-5 this season with a 5.62 ERA in 25 outings (13 starts) with 97.2 innings, 57 strikeouts and 38 walks allowed. Doran pitched one season at Tech in 2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the third round by the Houston Astros.
Colt Hynes (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Triple-A - Albuquerque Isotopes)
Hynes allowed just one run in three relief outings last week while posting five innings with three strikeouts without allowing a walk. He is 1-3 this season in Triple-A with a 4.29 ERA in 40 relief outings with two saves, 50.1 innings, 42 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. Hynes pitched two seasons at Tech, 2006-07, and was drafted in 2007 in the 31st round by the San Diego Padres.
Nathan Karns (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Tampa Bay Rays - Triple-A - Durham Bulls)
Karns currently ranks second in the International League with 124 strikeouts. He made two starts this past week earning a pair of wins in 13 innings allowing just four runs on 11 hits with 11 strikeouts and three walks allowed. He struck out seven in seven innings on July 28 in the win while recording his ninth win of the year on Sunday with six innings pitched and four strikeouts allowing two runs and one walks. He is 9-5 this season with a 4.68 ERA in 22 starts. He has pitched 119.1 innings with 124 strikeouts and allowed 49 walks. Karns pitched two years at Tech, 2008-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 12th round by the Washington Nationals.
Dustin Richardson (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Angels - Triple-A - Salt Lake Bees)
Richardson made three outings last week - all scoreless - while posting three innings with five strikeouts allowing just one run and one walk. He is 3-3 in 23 outings this season with three starts, 40.1 innings, 45 strikeouts and 19 walks allowed. Richardson pitched two seasons at Tech, 2005-06, and was drafted in 2006 in the fifth round by the Boston Red Sox.
Zach Stewart (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Atlanta Braves - Triple-A - Gwinnett Braves)
Stewart returned to Triple-A Gwinnett this past week after making three rehab starts. He made two relief outings this past week in Triple-A where he combined pitched 3.1 innings allowing two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk allowed. He is 5-4 this season with a 3.97 ERA in 16 outings (12 starts) with 79.1 innings, 40 strikeouts and 25 walks allowed. Stewart pitched one season at Tech in 2008 and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Josh Tomlin (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Cleveland Indians - Triple-A Columbus Clippers)
Tomlin was sent to Triple-A this past week and made one start with Columbus on July 31 going five innings in a no decision allowing a pair of runs on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk allowed. In 15 MLB outings (14 starts), Tomlin is 5-7 with a 4.47 ERA with one complete game, one shutout and 86.2 innings pitched with 77 strikeouts and 10 walks allowed. Tomlin pitched one season at Tech in 2006 and was drafted in 2006 in the 19th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Daniel Coulombe (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Double-A - Chattanooga Lookouts)
Coulombe was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga after having a stellar season in Class-A Advanced in the California League this season. Coulombe tallied three relief outings this past week allowing just one run in 2.2 innings with four strikeouts and didn't allow a walk. He is 3-0 this season - combined Single-A and Double-A - with a 3.00 ERA in 39 outings with five saves, 54.0 innings, 78 strikeouts and 19 walks allowed. Coulombe pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 25th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
James Leverton (LHP -Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Double-A - Jacksonville Suns)
Leverton is currently on the seven-day disabled list with his most recent outing on July 6. Leverton was up for big-league spring training but has been in Double-A this season where he has made seven relief outings with a 0-1 record, 4.15 ERA, 8.2 innings pitched and has seven strikeouts and three walks allowed. He is one of three Red Raiders from the 2008 MLB Draft class (Roger Kieschnick, Zach Stewart) who remain in professional baseball. Leverton pitched three years at Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the 8th round by the Chicago Cubs.
Kelby Tomlinson (SS -San Francisco Giants - Double-A - Richmond Flying Squirrels)
Tomlinson leads the Eastern League with 44 stolen bases and finished last week with at least one hit in three contests. He is batting .265 (91-for-344) on the season with 50 runs, seven doubles, five triples, one home run and 27 RBI. He is 44-of-54 in stolen base attempts. Tomlinson played one year at Tech in 2011 and was drafted in 2011 in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants.
Duke von Schamann (RHP - Starting - Cleveland Indians - Double-A - Akron RubberDucks)
von Schamann tallied his second straight victory in back-to-back scoreless starts while going seven innings allowing five hits on July 30 with six strikeouts and one walk allowed. He is 7-6 this season with a 3.90 ERA in 22 outings (18 starts) with one save, 122.1 innings, 61 strikeouts and 27 walks allowed. von Schamann pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Barrett Barnes (OF -Pittsburgh Pirates - Class A Advanced - Bradenton Marauders)
Barnes was promoted to Class A Advanced Bradenton after batting .313 (5-for-16) in the Gulf Coast League. Barnes was recently placed on the disabled list following a game on July 21. He is batting .240 (12-for-50) in 17 games this season while playing in Rookie League, Single-A and Class A Advanced. He has nine runs, four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI on the season. Barnes played three years at Tech, 2010-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Shane Broyles (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Class A Advanced - Modesto Nuts)
Broyles made just one relief outing this past week going 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout. He is 2-2 on the season with a 3.71 ERA in 36 relief outings with one save, 53.1 innings, 58 strikeouts and 18 walks allowed. Broyles pitched one year at Tech in 2012 and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Colorado Rockies.
Reid Redman (RHP - Florida Marlins - Class A Advanced - Jupiter Hammerheads)
Redman was named to the Florida State League All-Star Game after starting the year as one of the top relievers in Class A-Advanced. Redman - who also made one outing in Double-A this season - has made six straight outings without allowing an earned run, including three this past week. Redman hasn't allowed an earned run since July 14 while notching at least a pair of strikeouts in four of his last five appearances. He is 3-1 this season with a 2.23 ERA in 34 outings with five saves, 48.1 innings, 56 strikeouts and 10 walks allowed. Redman played two years at Tech as a third baseman, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 23rd round by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Brett Bruening (RHP - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Bruening is currently on the seven-day disabled list. Bruening, who hasn't pitched the past three seasons, returned to minor league baseball in 2014 and has made three outings this season - all in relief - with three innings pitched, a walk and a strikeout. Bruening played one year at Tech, 2010, and was drafted in 2010 in the 42nd round by the Chicago White Sox.
Jamodrick McGruder (2B - Cincinnati Reds - Single-A - Dayton Dragons)
McGruder, a 2012 All-American at Texas Tech, had four base hits last week, including a 2-for-4 performance with a triple and RBI on July 28. McGruder is batting .242 (70-for-289) with 40 runs, 10 doubles, seven triples, two home runs, 23 RBI and 12-of-18 stolen bases on the season. McGruder played three years at Tech, 2010-2012, and was drafted in 2012 in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners.
Chris Sadberry (LHP - Starting Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Single-A - Greensboro Grasshoppers)
Sadberry was promoted to Class A Greensboro in the South Atlantic League after making four starts in the New York Penn League for Batavia. He made his first two starts in Single-A last week while notching his first Single-A win on Aug. 2 going five innings allowing two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and not allowing a walk. In six minor league starts this year, Sadberry is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 21.0 innings with 20 strikeouts and five walks allowed. Sadberry pitched one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the sixth round by the Miami Marlins.
Andre Wheeler (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Wheeler made one scoreless relief outing last week with two innings pitched on July 31 with two strikeouts and one walk allowed. He is 1-3 this season with a 3.61 ERA in 23 outings (11 relief) with 72.1 innings, 84 strikeouts and 25 walks allowed. Wheeler pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the 15th round by the Chicago White Sox.
Trey Masek (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago Cubs - Short-Season A - Boise Hawks)
Masek, who was held in extended spring training due to injury, has made two relief outings this season with a 9.82 ERA in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and four walks allowed. Masek's first outing came on June 18 when he struck out four in two scoreless innings. Masek pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the fifth round by the Chicago Cubs.
Jerad McCrummen (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Short-Season A - Tri-City Dust Devils)
McCrummen tallied three relief outings last week with a combined three innings pitched with two runs allowed with three strikeouts and two walks allowed. He is 3-1 this season with a 3.18 ERA in 16 relief outings with one save, 28.1 innings and 24 strikeouts and eight walks allowed. McCrummen pitched three years at Tech, 2011-2013, and was drafted in 2013 in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies.
Jonny Drozd (LHP - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Drozd posted two appearances last week without allowing an earned run while collecting his second save of the season with 2.2 innings pitched and three strikeouts. Drozd has made five professional outings - all without allowing an earned run - with a 0-0 record, 0.00 ERA, two saves, 5.1 innings pitched with eight strikeouts and he hasn't allowed a walk this year. Drozd pitched two years at Tech, 2013-14, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.
Adam Kirsch (OF - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Kirsch had a memorable first couple games in professional baseball going 5-for-10 with four runs, two doubles, two home runs - a grand slam - and seven RBI during his first two career games in professional baseball. Kirsch finished last week going 0-for-2 with a walk on July 5. Kirsch played one year at Tech, 2014, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.
Hunter Redman (C - Los Angeles Dodgers - Rookie League - Ogden Raptors)
Redman has now homered in back-to-back games while going 1-for-3 with two runs and a homer and two RBI on Aug. 1. He is batting .207 (6-for-29) on the season with a double, two home runs and four RBI on the season. Redman played one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
