von Schamann has won his last four starts with a 0.00 ERA in 28 innings with 14 strikeouts allowing just one walk. He was also recently named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week.
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball program started the 2014 Major League Baseball season with several former players on MLB rosters and on Minor League Baseball teams trying to reach the big leagues.
Currently, there are 25 former Texas Tech players who are playing with an MLB organization as a player. Throughout the remainder of the summer, Texas Tech athletics communications will provide weekly updates on former Red Raiders competing at the major league and minor league level.
Roger Kieschnick (OF -Arizona Diamondbacks)
Kieschnick was recalled to the big leagues on the trade deadline - July 31 - and has since played in six games with the D-Backs. He played in three games last week - two as a starter - while hitting safely in both starts going 1-for-4 on Aug. 6 and 1-for-3 on Aug. 7 - both games against the Royals at home. He is batting .195 (8-for-41) in 25 big league games with a double, homer and two RBI. Kieschnick was a three-year starter for Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the San Francisco Giants.
AJ Ramos (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins)
Ramos made three scoreless relief outings last week and has now allowed just one earned run during his last 18 outings dating back to June 10. He is now 5-0 with a 1.96 ERA in 47 appearances with 46.0 innings, 53 strikeouts and 33 walks allowed. Ramos pitched four years at Tech, 2006-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 21st round by the Florida Marlins.
Josh Tomlin (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Cleveland Indians)
Tomlin made two outings this past week combining for 5.2 innings with six strikeouts allowing just one walk. He took the loss on Aug. 5 giving up five earned runs in 4.1 innings at home against Cincinnati. He pitched 1.1 innings without yielding a run at New York on Aug. 8. He is 5-8 this season with a 4.68 ERA in 15 starts with one complete game, one shutout, 92.1 innings pitched, 83 strikeouts and 11 walks allowed. Tomlin pitched one season at Tech in 2006 and was drafted in 2006 in the 19th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Chad Bettis (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Triple-A - Colorado Springs Sky Sox)
Bettis has been up in the big leagues and back in Triple-A Colorado Springs several times this season and he is currently with the Sky Sox where he made two outings last week - both in relief - allowing just two runs in 7.1 combined innings with nine strikeouts and three walks allowed. He didn't figure in the decision during either outing. He is 2-2 this season with a 1.86 ERA in 17 relief outings this season in Triple-A with 38.2 innings, 41 strikeouts and 15 walks allowed. Bettis pitched three seasons at Tech, 2008-2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the second round by the Colorado Rockies.
Bobby Doran (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Triple-A - Charlotte Knights)
Doran, who has 36 career minor league wins, was part of a trade this season going from the Houston Astros organization to the Chicago White Sox - where he joined Triple-A Charlotte. Doran has won two straight starts - both within the last week - while going at least five innings and allowing three earned runs in each outing. Doran is 6-5 this season with a 5.55 ERA in 27 outings this season (15 starts) with 108.2 innings, 66 strikeouts and 44 walks allowed. Doran pitched one season at Tech in 2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the third round by the Houston Astros.
Colt Hynes (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Triple-A - Albuquerque Isotopes)
Hynes was designated for assignment after making 42 appearances this season with a 1-3 record, 4.08 ERA and collected two saves with 53.0 innings, 46 strikeouts and 10 walks allowed. Hynes pitched two seasons at Tech, 2006-07, and was drafted in 2007 in the 31st round by the San Diego Padres.
Nathan Karns (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Tampa Bay Rays - Triple-A - Durham Bulls)
Karns leads the International League with 132 strikeouts. He took the loss in his most recent start on Aug. 10 pitching six innings with eight strikeouts allowing three earned runs allowing two walks againstd Buffalo. He is 9-6 this season with a 4.67 ERA in 23 starts with 125.1 innings with 132 strikeouts and 51 walks allowed. Karns pitched two years at Tech, 2008-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 12th round by the Washington Nationals.
Dustin Richardson (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Angels - Triple-A - Salt Lake Bees)
Richardson made five outings since Aug. 5 while posting four scoreless appearances. He has recorded the save in his last two outings on back-to-back nights (Aug. 10-11). He is 3-3 this season with a 6.60 ERA in 28 outings (3 starts) with two saves, 43.2 innings and 49 strikeouts and 22 walks allowed. Richardson pitched two seasons at Tech, 2005-06, and was drafted in 2006 in the fifth round by the Boston Red Sox.
Zach Stewart (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Atlanta Braves - Triple-A - Gwinnett Braves)
Stewart made two outings this past week - both ending in no decisions - while pitching two innings allowing five earned runs on Aug. 6 and giving up eight earned runs in 3.2 innings on Aug. 11. He is 5-4 this season with a 5.08 ERA in 18 outings (13 starts) with 85.0 innings with 46 strikeouts and 29 walks allowed. Stewart pitched one season at Tech in 2008 and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Daniel Coulombe (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Double-A - Chattanooga Lookouts)
Coulombe was promoted to Double-A Chattanooga after having a stellar season in Class-A Advanced in the California League this season. Coulombe posted a pair of scoreless outings last week with a combined 1.1 innings pitched. He is 3-0 this season with a 2.93 ERA in 41 relief outings with five saves, 79 strikeouts and 21 walks allowed. Coulombe pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 25th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
James Leverton (LHP -Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Double-A - Jacksonville Suns)
Leverton is currently on the seven-day disabled list with his most recent outing on July 6. Leverton was up for big-league spring training but has been in Double-A this season where he has made seven relief outings with a 0-1 record, 4.15 ERA, 8.2 innings pitched and has seven strikeouts and three walks allowed. He is one of three Red Raiders from the 2008 MLB Draft class (Roger Kieschnick, Zach Stewart) who remain in professional baseball. Leverton pitched three years at Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the 8th round by the Chicago Cubs.
Kelby Tomlinson (2B -San Francisco Giants - Double-A - Richmond Flying Squirrels)
Tomlinson leads the Eastern League with 44 stolen bases and hit safely in a pair of games last week, including a multi-hit game on Aug. 9 going 2-for-6 with two runs scored. He is batting .258 (94-for-365) this season with 54 runs, seven doubles, five triples, a home run and 27 RBI and is 44-of-54 in stolen base attempts. Tomlinson played one year at Tech in 2011 and was drafted in 2011 in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants.
Duke von Schamann (RHP - Starting - Cleveland Indians - Double-A - Akron RubberDucks)
von Schamann won his fourth straight start on Aug. 10 going seven innings allowing two earned runs with a strikeout and not allowing a walk. von Schamann is now 4-0 during his last four starts with a 1.29 ERA with 28.0 innings, allowed just four earned runs with 14 strikeouts and one walk allowed. He is 9-6 on the season with a 3.76 ERA in 24 outings (20 starts) with one save, 136.1 innings, 66 strikeouts and 27 walks allowed. von Schamann pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Barrett Barnes (OF -Pittsburgh Pirates - Class A Advanced - Bradenton Marauders)
Barnes was promoted to Class A Advanced Bradenton after batting .313 (5-for-16) in the Gulf Coast League. Barnes was placed on the disabled list following a game on July 21. He is batting .240 (12-for-50) in 17 games this season while playing in Rookie League, Single-A and Class A Advanced. He has nine runs, four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI on the season. Barnes played three years at Tech, 2010-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Shane Broyles (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Class A Advanced - Modesto Nuts)
Broyles made two outings last week - both in relief - allowing just one run in both while pitching 4.1 innings with four strikeouts and allowing two walks. He is 2-2 this season with a 3.59 ERA in 38 relief appearances with one save, 57.2 innings, 62 strikeouts and 20 walks allowed. Broyles pitched one year at Tech in 2012 and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Colorado Rockies.
Reid Redman (RHP - Florida Marlins - Class A Advanced - Jupiter Hammerheads)
Redman was named to the Florida State League All-Star Game after starting the year as one of the top relievers in Class A-Advanced. Redman - who also made one outing in Double-A this season - is leading the team in ERA (pitchers with more than 28 IP) and is 4-1 with a 2.22 ERA with 35 outings, six saves, 48.2 innings, 58 strikeouts and just nine walks allowed. Redman picked up his sixth save of the season on Aug. 8 pitching a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. Redman played two years at Tech as a third baseman, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 23rd round by the Tampa Bay Rays.
Brett Bruening (RHP - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Bruening is currently on the seven-day disabled list. Bruening, who hasn't pitched the past three seasons, returned to minor league baseball in 2014 and has made three outings this season - all in relief - with three innings pitched, a walk and a strikeout. Bruening played one year at Tech, 2010, and was drafted in 2010 in the 42nd round by the Chicago White Sox.
Jamodrick McGruder (2B - Cincinnati Reds - Single-A - Dayton Dragons)
McGruder, a 2012 All-American at Texas Tech, has played in 82 games this season while batting .236 (70-for-297) with 42 runs, 10 doubles, seven triples, two home runs, 24 RBI and is 12-for-19 in stolen base attempts. McGruder played three years at Tech, 2010-2012, and was drafted in 2012 in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners.
Chris Sadberry (LHP - Starting Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Single-A - Greensboro Grasshoppers)
Sadberry was promoted to Class A Greensboro in the South Atlantic League after making four starts in the New York Penn League for Batavia. He made his third start in Single-A on Aug. 7 going five innings allowing just one earned run with five strikeouts allowing just one walk. He is 1-1 this season in seven starts with 26.0 innings with 25 strikeouts allowing just six walks. Sadberry pitched one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the sixth round by the Miami Marlins.
Andre Wheeler (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Wheeler recorded two scoreless outings last week with 10 combined innings and earning the win in his most recent appearance on Aug. 11. Wheeler is 2-3 this season with a 3.17 ERA in 25 outings (13 starts) with 82.1 innings, 93 strikeouts and 29 walks allowed. Wheeler pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the 15th round by the Chicago White Sox.
Trey Masek (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago Cubs - Short-Season A - Boise Hawks)
Masek, who was held in extended spring training due to injury, has made two relief outings this season with a 9.82 ERA in 3.2 innings with five strikeouts and four walks allowed. Masek's first outing came on June 18 when he struck out four in two scoreless innings. Masek pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the fifth round by the Chicago Cubs.
Jerad McCrummen (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Short-Season A - Tri-City Dust Devils)
McCrummen made two relief outings last week pitching a combined 3.2 innings with three strikeouts allowing two runs and a walk. McCrummen is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA this season in 18 outings with one save, 32.0 innings, 27 strikeouts and nine walks allowed. McCrummen pitched three years at Tech, 2011-2013, and was drafted in 2013 in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies.
Jonny Drozd (LHP - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Drozd has yet to allow an earned run while making seven relief outings as a professional with a spotless 0.00 ERA with three saves, 8.1 innings with 11 strikeouts and zero walks allowed. Drozd pitched two years at Tech, 2013-14, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.
Adam Kirsch (OF - New York Yankees - Rookie League - Gulf Coast League Yankees)
Kirsch had a memorable first couple games in professional baseball going 5-for-10 with four runs, two doubles, two home runs - a grand slam - and seven RBI during his first two career games in professional baseball. Kirsch finished last week going 0-for-2 with a walk on July 5. Kirsch played one year at Tech, 2014, and signed a free agent contract in 2014 with the New York Yankees.
Hunter Redman (C - Los Angeles Dodgers - Rookie League - Ogden Raptors)
Redman has a five-game hit streak dating back to July 24 which includes a pair of homers and four RBI. He is batting .242 (8-for-33) with a double, two home runs and five RBI this season. Redman played one year at Tech, 2014, and was drafted in 2014 in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
