REDMAN, CONLEY and EURESTE CHOSE TEXAS TECH
The deadline for Major League Baseball organizations to sign the picks they made in the 2011 First-Year Players Draft has come and gone, and now the Red Raiders will look forward to third baseman Reid Redman (Los Angeles Dodgers - 37th Round) returning for his senior season and will welcome incoming freshman shortstop Matt Eureste (Cleveland Indians - 40th Round) and junior-college transfer outfielder Devon Conley (Baltimore Orioles - 47th Round) to the Texas Tech campus. The deadline for MLB teams to sign draft picks was 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 15.
FOUR RED RAIDERS AND ONE TECH SIGNEE INK MLB CONTRACTS
The 2011 MLB Draft saw plenty of action including Texas Tech players and Red Raider signees. Junior shortstop Kelby Tomlinson signed with the San Francisco Giants as a 12th round pick, senior infielder Nick Popescu signed with the Braves (33rd Round), left-handed pitcher Zach Fowler (34th Round) signed a deal with the Baltimore Orioles and left-handed free agent Robbie Kilcrease signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. One Texas Tech signee, shortstop/third baseman Trey Ford - from South Mountain CC, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in the 14th round.
SEVEN RED RAIDERS HAVE BEEN SELECTED IN MLB DRAFT
Texas Tech will enter the 2011-2012 year with seven players who have been drafted at one point during their career in the MLB Draft, including LHP Daniel Coulombe, OF/LHP Andre Wheeler, 1B Stephen Hagen, LHP Rusty Shellhorn, 3B Reid Redman, OF Devon Conley and SS Matt Eureste.
TEXAS TECH HAS PRODUCED 123 MLB DRAFT/FREE AGENT SELECTIONS
The Texas Tech baseball program began in 1926 and played baseball until 1929 before starting back up in 1954 where it has since played baseball in 58 consecutive seasons. Since 1962, there have been 123 Major League Baseball Draft or free agent selections. There have been 105 draft picks and 18 free agent selections. There have been 42 draft picks/free agents over the last eight seasons, an average of at least five players drafted per season.
BREAKDOWN OF RED RAIDER DRAFT PICKS
Texas Tech has had 105 draft picks since 1969. Overall, there has been at least one Red Raider drafted in 34 MLB Drafts, with 23 drafts containing at least two Texas Tech players. The 2011 MLB Draft saw four Red Raiders drafted and one sign as a free agent, which matches the programs most since having seven draft picks in 2006. It is the second straight year Tech has had five drafted/signed. Six times in the last eight years there have been at least five Texas Tech players drafted/sign as free agents.
CONSISTENCY IN THE DRAFT
There has been at least one Tech player drafted/signed free agent contract in 24 consecutive drafts (1988-2011) and in 29 of the last 30 drafts dating back to 1982. The only draft during the past 30 years where a Tech player was not selected/signed free agent was in 1987. In fact, during the past 24 years there have been multiple Red Raiders drafted/signed free agent deals.
TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH Dan Spencer - MENTORED 64 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT PICKS SINCE 1997
Dan Spencer has had numerous success stories in his college baseball coaching career. Among them is coaching 64 players in his time at Oregon State (1997-2007) and Texas Tech (2008-Present) that have been selected/signed free agent in the MLB Draft. He coached 45 players at Oregon State and 19 players at Texas Tech that have been drafted or who have signed free agent. Overall Spencer has coached three first-round picks, 14 players who have gone in the top five rounds and 26 players who have been drafted in the top 10 rounds. In only four years at Tech, Spencer has worked with 12 pitchers that have been drafted/signed free agent - including four top-10 round selections. Spencer has coached eight players (7 at Oregon State) that have since made their MLB debuts.
