The Texas Tech baseball program started the 2013 Major League Baseball season with several former players on MLB rosters and on Minor League Baseball teams trying to reach the big leagues.
Currently, there are 26 former Texas Tech players who are playing with an MLB organization as a player. Throughout the remainder of the 2013 MLB season, Texas Tech athletics communications will provide weekly updates on former Red Raiders competing at the major league and minor league level.
Chad Bettis (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Colorado Rockies)
Bettis took the loss for the Rockies in his start on Saturday, despite allowing just two earned runs while the Orioles scored eight runs on seven hits off Bettis in 2.2 innings. The Rockies suffered an 8-4 loss while Bettis dropped his second game and is still looking for his first MLB win. In four starts with the Rockies, Bettis is 0-2 with a 5.30 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched with 21 hits allowed, eight strikeouts and 12 walks given up. Bettis became the 27th Red Raider to play in the big leagues after making his MLB debut in a start at New York Mets on Aug. 1. Bettis pitched three seasons at Tech, 2008-2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the second round by the Colorado Rockies.
Colt Hynes (LHP - Relief Pitcher - San Diego Padres)
Hynes has made 13 appearances in the big leagues this season, including two last week. He allowed six earned runs in an inning of work with a walk allowed at Colorado last Monday and then pitched 1.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts at home against the Mets on Friday. Hynes does not have a win or loss in 13 appearances with the Padres while posting a 9.82 ERA in 11.0 innings with 18 hits allowed, nine strikeouts and three walks allowed. Hynes pitched two seasons at Tech, 2006-07, and was drafted in 2007 in the 31st round by the San Diego Padres.
Jeff Karstens (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Pittsburgh Pirates)
Karstens underwent right shoulder rotator cuff and labrum surgery in June and is expected to miss 10-12 weeks of action. The 2013 season will mark Karsten's eighth as a big leaguer while owning 26 career wins and a 4.44 career ERA in 138 appearances and 92 starts. Karstens pitched one season at Tech in 2003 and was drafted in 2003 in the 19th round by the New York Yankees.
Roger Kieschnick (OF -San Francisco Giants)
Kieschnick hit safely in three of five games played last week while finishing the week with a 1-for-2 performance with a pair of walks on Sunday at Miami. In 16 big league games this season, Kieschnick is batting .245 (12-for-49) with four runs, a triple, four RBI and seven walks. He became the 26th Red Raider to play in the big leagues when he made his MLB debut with the Giants as the starting left fielder on July 31 at Philadelphia. Kieschnick was a three-year starter for Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the San Francisco Giants.
AJ Ramos (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins)
Ramos made a pair of appearances last week with two scoreless relief innings Wednesday at Kansas City and with 0.2 innings pitched allowing three walks and two earned runs on Saturday at home against San Francisco. Ramos is 3-4 this season with a 3.52 ERA in 51 outings with 64.0 innings pitched, 47 hits allowed and 66 strikeouts with 31 walks allowed. Ramos' 51 appearances are the third most by a Red Raider during a single-season at the big-league level. Mark Brandenburg made 55 outings for the Rangers in 1996 and Chris Sampson made 54 appearances in 2008 with Houston. Ramos pitched four years at Tech, 2006-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 21st round by the Florida Marlins.
Josh Tomlin (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Cleveland Indians)
Tomlin continues his rehab assignments in the minor leagues while making a start last week for the Akron Aeros on Friday while going four innings allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts and not allowing a walk. In seven rehab assignments (5 starts), Tomlin has a 0.73 ERA in 12.1 innings with 10 strikeouts and zero walks allowed. Tomlin had successful Tommy John surgery on his right pitching elbow in August of 2012 and was placed on the team's 60-day disabled list on February 15. In three MLB seasons, Tomlin is 23-19 with a 4.95 ERA in 54 starts (59 APP) with 341.2 innings pitched with 188 strikeouts and 65 walks allowed. Tomlin pitched one season at Tech in 2006 and was drafted in 2006 in the 19th round by the Cleveland Indians.
Bobby Doran (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Houston Astros - Triple-A - Oklahoma City RedHawks)
Doran pitched six solid innings in a start last Wednesday but took a no decision after allowing just two runs on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Doran is 9-2 this season with a 3.53 ERA in 28 appearances (18 starts) with two saves, 119.2 innings pitched, 81 strikeouts and 32 walks allowed. Doran pitched one season at Tech in 2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the third round by the Houston Astros.
Jay Johnson (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Philadelphia Phillies - Triple-A - Lehigh Valley IronPigs)
Johnson made two relief outings last week - his second resulting in a loss. He pitched 0.2 scoreless innings on Thursday with a strikeout. He allowed two runs in 0.1 innings - giving up a home run - while taking just his fourth loss of the season on Sunday. Johnson is 2-4 in both Double-A and Triple-A this season with a 3.64 ERA in 49 outings - all coming from the bullpen - with three saves, 47.0 innings pitched, 60 strikeouts and 38 walks allowed. Johnson pitched one year at Tech in 2010 and was drafted in 2010 in the 26th round by the Toronto Blue Jays.
James Leverton (LHP -Relief Pitcher - Miami Marlins - Triple-A - New Orleans Zephyrs)
Since receiving a promotion to Triple-A, Leverton has been impressive in 27 outings with a 3-1 record, 2.63 ERA and 48.0 innings pitched with just 28 hits allowed and 45 strikeouts with 19 walks. He made three relief outings last week - two scoreless - in a combined 6.1 innings pitched with six strikeouts and six walks allowed. Leverton pitched three years at Tech, 2006-08, and was drafted in 2008 in the 8th round by the Chicago Cubs.
Dustin Richardson (LHP - Starting/Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Angels - Triple-A - Salt Lake Bees)
Richardson has been moved to the bullpen and that's where he made two appearances from this past week pitching a combined four innings allowing four runs on six hits with a strikeout. Richardson is 5-2 this season with a 6.19 ERA in 15 outings (7 starts) with 48.0 innings pitched, 40 strikeouts and 29 walks allowed. Richardson pitched two seasons at Tech, 2005-06, and was drafted in 2006 in the fifth round by the Boston Red Sox.
Zach Stewart (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Triple-A - Charlotte Knights)
Stewart took a no decision during his only start last week going five innings allowing three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks at home against Durham on Sunday. He is 5-13 on the season with a 4.80 ERA in 25 starts with 146.1 innings pitched, 108 strikeouts and 33 walks allowed. Stewart pitched one season at Tech in 2008 and was drafted in 2008 in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds.
Nathan Karns (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Washington Nationals - Double-A - Harrisburg Senators)
Karns became the 24th Red Raider to make his MLB debut earlier this season (May 28) but has since been sent back down to Double-A Harrisburg. Karns suffered his sixth loss of the season last Wednesday going five innings but allowing four runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts and a walk. He is 7-6 this season with a 3.45 ERA in 20 starts with two complete games, 112.1 innings pitched, 132 strikeouts and 44 walks allowed. Karns pitched two years at Tech, 2008-09, and was drafted in 2009 in the 12th round by the Washington Nationals.
Kelby Tomlinson (SS -San Francisco Giants - Double-A - Richmond Flying Squirrels)
Tomlinson started out the week going 2-for-5 in back-to-back games with two walks and two RBI before finishing the week 0-for-10 with four strikeouts. Tomlinson is batting .143 (9-for-63) in Double-A with five runs, a double and two RBI with nine walks and a pair of stolen bases. In all three levels of minor league baseball this year, Tomlinson is batting .240 (53-for-225) with nine doubles, a triple and home run with 20 RBI. Tomlinson played one year at Tech in 2011 and was drafted in 2011 in the 12th round by the San Francisco Giants.
Duke von Schamann (RHP - Starting - Los Angeles Dodgers - Double-A - Chattanooga Lookouts)
von Schamann led Class A with eight wins before being promoted to Double-A in the middle of June. von Schamann made two outings this past week - one in relief - and combined for four innings pitched, nine runs allowed on 12 hits with a strikeout. He took the loss in his most recent outing, a start at Jacksonville on Sunday, allowing six runs on 10 hits in four innings. In both Class-A Advanced and Double-A this season, von Schamann is 11-7 with a 4.82 ERA in 24 outings (22 starts) with 121.1 innings pitched, 94 strikeouts and 35 walks allowed. von Schamann pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Daniel Coulombe (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Los Angeles Dodgers - Class A Advanced - Rancho Cucamonga Quakes)
Coulombe struck out seven batters in three innings last week - which included a pair of relief outings. He pitched one inning striking out two on Tuesday before pitching on Saturday when he tallied two innings of work with five strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Of Coulombe's last seven innings of work, 14-of-21 outs have come via strikeout. Coulombe pitched two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 25th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Zach Fowler (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Baltimore Orioles - Class A Advanced - Frederick Keys)
Fowler pitched five innings in relief last week during two separate outings. He notched two innings allowing one run with three strikeouts on Wednesday while finishing the week on Sunday with three scoreless frames with three strikeouts and a walk. On the season, Fowler is 3-4 with a 2.66 ERA in 34 outings with two saves, 64.1 innings pitched, 49 strikeouts and 24 walks allowed. Fowler pitched one year at Tech in 2011 and was drafted in 2011 in the 34th round by the Baltimore Orioles.
Robbie Kilcrease (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Pittsburgh Pirates - Class A Advanced - Bradenton Marauders)
Kilcrease remains one of the top middle relievers in Class-A Advanced Florida State League with a 1.22 ERA in 37 appearances this season. He made three scoreless outings last week - now has eight in a row - while combining for 3.2 innings pitched and picking up his 10th save of the season. His most recent outing was on Saturday when he struck out a pair and Kilcrease ranks 10th in the Florida State League in saves and has three holds. Kilcrease pitched three years at Tech, 2008-09, 2011, and signed as a free agent in 2011 with the Pirates.
Bo Altobelli (C - Minnesota Twins - Single-A - Cedar Rapids Kernals)
Altobelli played in a pair of games last week behind the plate going 1-for-6 with a walk. He is batting .250 (11-for-44) in both Rookie League and Class-A, with a double, four walks and a .327 on-base percentage. Altobelli played three years at Tech, 2010-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 21st round by the Minnesota Twins.
Barrett Barnes (OF -Pittsburgh Pirates - Single-A - West Virginia Power)
Following a doubleheader on July 23, Barnes was placed on the disabled list injuring his right hamstring, the same hamstring that limited Barnes' action earlier this season. He is currently batting .268 (49-for-183) with 26 runs, nine doubles, five home runs, 24 RBI and 17 walks with 10 stolen bases in 46 games this season. Barnes played three years at Tech, 2010-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the first round by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Jamodrick McGruder (LF - Seattle Mariners - Single-A - Clinton LumberKings)
McGruder struggled last week going 0-for-9 in three games, despite reaching base four times via walk. In both levels of minor league baseball this season, McGruder is batting .240 (29-for-121) with two doubles, three triples, a home run, 10 RBI, 25 walks and 10-of-14 stolen bases in 43 games. McGruder played three years at Tech, 2010-2012, and was drafted in 2012 in the ninth round by the Seattle Mariners.
Rusty Shellhorn (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Seattle Mariners - Single-A - Clinton LumberKings)
Shellhorn suffered a season-ending knee injury during his last outing on June 7 as he tore the ACL in his right knee while covering first base. He finishes the season 0-1 with a 5.48 ERA in 11 appearances - 4 starts - with 21.1 innings, 15 strikeouts and 14 walks allowed while opponents batted .326 against him. Shellhorn pitched one year at Tech in 2012 and was drafted in 2012 in the 31st round by the Seattle Mariners.
Andre Wheeler (LHP - Relief Pitcher - Chicago White Sox - Single-A - Kannapolis Intimidators)
Wheeler posted saves in both appearances last week combining for 2.2 innings pitched and three strikeouts allowing just one hit and one run. He is now 0-1 in both Rookie League and Class-A this season with a 3.51 ERA in 15 outings with five saves, 25.2 innings pitched, 35 strikeouts and five walks allowed. Wheeler pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the 15th round by the Chicago White Sox.
Shane Broyles (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Short-Season A - Tri-City Dusters)
Broyles had a successful stint in Short-Season A Tri-City, but has now been moved back up to Class-A Asheville Tourists where he started the season. Broyles made one relief outing last week pitching 1.1 scoreless innings with a strikeout without allowing a hit. In both levels of minor league baseball this season, Broyles is 6-9 with a 5.44 ERA in 28 appearances (15 starts) with 94.1 innings pitched with 92 strikeouts and 40 walks allowed. Broyles pitched one year at Tech in 2012 and was drafted in 2012 in the 14th round by the Colorado Rockies.
Trey Masek (RHP - Starting Pitcher - Chicago Cubs - Short-Season A - Boise Hawks)
Masek made one relief appearance last week allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings of work. He is 1-1 this season with a 3.79 ERA in 12 appearances with 19.0 innings pitched, 21 strikeouts and 10 walks allowed. Masek pitched three years at Tech, 2011-13, and was drafted in 2013 in the fifth round by the Chicago Cubs.
Jerad McCrummen (RHP - Relief Pitcher - Colorado Rockies - Short-Season A - Tri-City Dust Devils)
McCrummen made his seventh scoreless outings over his last eight appearances on Thursday allowing just one hit in 1.2 innings with three strikeouts. He is 2-1 this season with a 2.08 ERA in 18 outings with one save, 21.2 innings pitched and 19 strikeouts and four walks. McCrummen pitched three years at Tech, 2011-2013, and was drafted in 2013 in the 23rd round by the Colorado Rockies.
Reid Redman (RHP - Florida Marlins - Short-Season A - Batavia Muckdogs)
Redman has made the switch from position player to pitcher while joining the Miami Marlins following spring training and is now a reliever in the organization. Redman made two outings last week - his first was his 12th scoreless appearance in a row - while he gave up two runs in 1.1 innings with a strikeout on Sunday. Redman is 1-2 with a 1.66 ERA in 15 relief outings with 21.2 innings pitched, 16 hits allowed, 20 strikeouts and five walks allowed. Redman played two years at Tech, 2011-12, and was drafted in 2012 in the 23rd round by the Tampa Bay Rays.
