LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore right-handed pitcher Justin Bethard has been named the No. 14 Prospect from the Jayhawk League, according to Perfect Game.
Bethard (Frisco, Texas) completed his first season as a Red Raider in 2013 where he made 15 appearances (1 start) with a 0-1 record, 4.60 ERA and 29.1 innings pitched with 17 strikeouts and six walks allowed.
He pitched this past summer for the Liberal Bee Jays (Liberal, Kan.) in the Jayhawk League, where he was one of the top pitchers in the league during the summer season. Bethard, according to the Perfect Game Top Prospects list, was the eighth highest ranked pitcher and the third highest ranked player from the Big 12 Conference.
Bethard went 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA in 11 appearances with 59.1 innings pitched and struck out 60 batters with just 17 walks allowed.
During his freshman season at Tech, Bethard didn't allow a walk in 10-of-15 outings while striking out at least one batter in 9-of-15 appearances.
He pitched a season-high four innings twice, the most recent coming in relief at No. 11 Oklahoma (4/26/13). He struck out a season-high five batters in relief at West Virginia (3/22/13).
