LUBBOCK, Texas - Joining over 7,000 participants, the Texas Tech Baseball team volunteered at the 2008 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Saturday morning at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center.

While head coach Dan Spencer and his son, Wade, participated in the 5K race, the team lined the streets, encouraging and helping runners navigate the course.

"I thought it was a great event and definitely for a worthy cause," Spencer said. "It was nice to see the family and community involvement, and if things work out again next year, we will definitely want to be involved again."

The event serves as the primary fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and research and is one of several national events held by the Komen organization.

"Participating in an event like this is always fun because we are helping and encouraging so many people that have battled this disease," Tech catcher Monk Kreder said. "Seeing the faces of all the survivors light up was a sight to see and one I won't forget.

The team was joined by the Lady Raider Basketball team, the student athletic trainer organization, and other members of the athletics staff.
