Red Team Combines for One-Hitter in 5-3 Game 2 Victory
![]() Shellhorn earned the win pitching 4.1 innings with three strikeouts Oct. 24, 2011 LUBBOCK, Texas - Junior left-handed pitcher Rusty Shellhorn and two other Red Team pitchers combined for a one-hitter against the Black Team during Red's 5-3 win in game two of the annual Texas Tech baseball Red & Black Series on Monday at Rip Griffin Park. The victory gives the Red Team a 2-0 lead in the five-game series. Shellhorn allowed a single to third baseman Reid Redman to lead off the game, which was the final hit the Black Team would tally the remainder of the game. Shellhorn (1-0) earned the win while going 4.1 innings and allowing two runs (both unearned) on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks. Red Team first baseman Ryan Diaz led all hitters going 2-for-3 with an RBI, walk and a stolen base. Bryant Burleson (1-for-4, RBI), Jamodrick McGruder (1-for-2, 2 BB), Mason Randolph (1-for-3), Stephen Hagen (0-for-0, 3 BB, 2 R) and Kevin Whitehead (1-for-3, R) all tallied base hits for the Red Team. Senior All-American closer John Neely tallied his second save in as many games pitching the seventh inning while posting one strikeout and allowing a walk. Black Team starting pitcher sophomore right-handed pitcher Trey Masek took the loss going 2.1 innings while giving up three runs (all unearned) on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks allowed. Redman led the Black Team going 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored while freshman first baseman Blake Bass scored a run and reached base twice with a pair of walks while going 0-for-1. Junior designated hitter Scott LeJeune reached base twice with a walk and a fielder's choice while going 0-for-2. Freshman right fielders Brig Gerlich scored the Black Team's only other run while reaching on an error in the fifth inning. The Red & Black Series will continue on Tuesday, Oct. 25, with Game 3 set for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch at Rip Griffin Park. GAME 2 NOTES
