Black Team Wins Series with 8-3 Game-3 Victory

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech baseball team's fall campaign came to a close following the Black Team's 8-3 victory over the Red Team in Game 3 of the annual Red & Black Series Tuesday at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The Black Team won the series winning games one and three of the series.

Junior right-handed pitcher Trey Masek won his second game of the series with another dominating performance going five innings with four strikeouts while allowing two runs. Masek finished the series going 2-0 with a 2.22 ERA and collecting 10 strikeouts with just one walk.

Junior designated hitter Nick Gibert went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI, catcher Mason Randolph went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, right fielder Tyler Neslony added two hits, first baseman Eric Gutierrez went 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI and freshman Zach Davis went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases to lead the Black squad.

Red Team starting pitcher Corey Taylor took the loss allowing six runs (4 ER) on 10 hits in five innings with one strikeout. Junior third baseman Jake Barrios went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and RBI to lead the Red Team at the plate.

The Black Team scored early and often with a run in the second and third innings before plating two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings while sealing the win with another two runs in the eighth.

Gibert drove in three of the Black Team's first six runs with two doubles and a single in the game's opening five frames.

With a 6-3 lead in the eighth, the Black Team added two runs on RBI singles from shortstop Tim Proudfoot and Gutierrez.

Three Black Team pitchers (Johnathon Tripp, Joey Zurawik and Jerad McCrummen) combined allowed just one run in four relief innings while Zurawik and McCrummen both tallied scoreless outings.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders close fall team practices and will now look forward to 2013 Opening Day scheduled for Friday, Feb. 15 against Northern Illinois at 6 p.m. at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. BLACK TEAM
- DH Nick Gibert led all Black Team players batting .444 (4-for-9) with two doubles and four RBI.
- CF Devon Conley batted .417 (5-for-12) with two runs, two triples, two RBI and one stolen base.
- RHP Trey Masek led all pitchers in the series with two wins and tallied a 2.22 ERA with 10 strikeouts and one walk.
- C Mason Randolph batted .400 (4-for-10) with two doubles, four walks and an RBI.
- RHP Jerad McCrummen tallied a perfect 0.00 ERA in the series pitching 2.2 innings with two strikeouts and one walk.
- 3B Alec Humphreys led all Black Team players with four walks in the series.
- RHP Johnathon Tripp finished with a 2.25 ERA in two relief outings with four innings pitched, two strikeouts and two walks allowed.

RED TEAM
- DH Wade Stramp led the Red Team batting .375 (3-for-8) with two runs, four walks and an RBI and stolen base in the three-game series.
- 3B Jake Barrios batted .364 (4-for-11) with a run, double, triple, two RBI and a walk in the series.
- C Jarrard Poteete batted .300 (3-for-10) with a run and two walks in the series.
- RHP Heath Herrington was the only pitcher on either team to make an appearance in all three games of the series.
- Herrington tallied a save with a perfect 0.00 ERA in four innings with five strikeouts and five walks.
- RHP Dominic Moreno struck out six batters in two appearances and five innings pitched. Moreno finished with a 1.80 ERA.
- LHP Andre Wheeler struck out six in two appearances and 4.1 innings pitched. Wheeler finished with a 2.20 ERA.
