COACH JAMES DICKEY ON MARIO LAYNE
Mario is a player who I believe is a key to our basketball team. Talented. Explosive. He needs to become consistent and play with great confidence. He can be an outstanding player and rebounder, as well as an exciting offensive player.
JUNIOR (1998-99)
A starter in the first 16 games last season and 20 games overall ... best game was a 15-point effort against SMU and Nevada ... also grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds against Nevada ... instrumental in limiting SMU's top scorer to an 8-for-28 shooting performance ... one of the best leapers in the Big 12 Conference ... also handed out five assists against SMU ... scored 14 points against Tulsa and Pepperdine scored eight points on 3-of-4 shooting against Texas-Pan American ... scored 10 points off-the-bench at home against Texas A&M.
JUNIOR COLLEGE
Academic All-America selection...second-team NJCAA All-Region 5...first-team All-Western Junior College Athletic Conference...averaged 15.2 points and 4.7 rebounds...hit 49.5 percent of his shots...averaged 7.0 points and 3.2 rebounds as a freshman...in his two seasons, South Plains posted a 42-20 overall record and an 18-8 play in WJCAC action...Helped South Plains win the conference title in 1997 with a 22-8 overall mark while advancing to the NJCAA Region 5 tourney...team advanced to the NJCAA Region 5 semifinals and was the conference runner-up in 1998 with a 20-12 mark.
HIGH SCHOOL
Attended The Lodge School in St. John, Barbados...averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds for KFC Pinelands club team squad, which won the Premier League title in 1996...scored 30 points and grabbed nine rebounds in conference quarterfinals...also high jumped in High School...earned MVP and most improved player honors while in High School.
