Texas Tech Head Coach Chris Walker

Opening Statement
“First of all, give credit to Kansas State they did a great job, number 13 team in the country, we were looking forward to competing against them and Coach Weber really had his team prepared. They didn’t come into the game overlooking us and looking ahead to Kansas, I thought they took us serious and they play hard tonight and made plays when they had to. I thought we did a great job at defending them, but when they had to make plays down the stretch they made plays and one thing we did a great job of all game long was not turning the ball over, we had two, 20 turnover games consecutively and that’s what we harped on and we had four turnovers tonight, I couldn’t be any prouder of my guys tonight. They did a really good job tonight of taking care of the ball against one of the best teams in the country of taking care of the ball. We were down four and Jordan Tolbert shot two layups and if you make those two layups it might be a different game, and get a couple of those offensive boards, they had 11 second-chance points in the first half and none in the second half, even though they beat us on the glass, but had we got a couple of those tough plays it could’ve been a difference in the game. Now I talk to our guys about getting better and better and showing improvement, that’s the most important thing and that’s the measurement of what we use to guide our program and to continue to get better every game but yes there are things we need to work on every game, you stop one leak and another one springs, we’ve just got to keep working and now we have to emphasize toughness. I will say this, I’m proud of my guys and they way they came out and defended, we are not glorifying losing, we expect to win and we expected to win this game and I thought we had a really good chance and our guys put us in a position to do that we just came up a little short tonight.”

On if getting out rebounded was because Tech was hedging on their guards
“Some of it was, some of it was they just wanted it more than we did tonight and we have to do a better job of pursuing the ball better, we have to pursue the ball, we are a team that has a small margin of error, we are inexperienced and some teams have a little more talent than us and I continue to say to my players it’s not about the best team it’s who plays the best and there were certain situations where they played better than us and it wasn’t about talent and we just have to continue to do that. That team has a had a couple of years of winning and they have some guys that have been to the NCAA Tournament and have experienced some things our guys haven’t and we just have to continue to grow. We are in the beginning stage not so much a winning stage like them but it will come as time comes.”

On if he saw Tech start to believe they could beat a ranked team
“Absolutely, we don’t talk about it in terms of ranked team, we watch a team and say these guys are beatable, no disrespect to them because it’s always about us, it’s never about them and it’s what we measure ourselves by and the measurement is was let’s not turn the ball over and let’s be tougher than them but we came up short in that category and we always want to out rebound the other team but again this is where we are this is our journey and there is an expectation of winning and we are not sitting here with moral victories, we want to win every single game and that’s what we play to do and why we prepare every single day and we will continue to get better and continue to improve and continue to have the right attitude and as I told those guys about Baltimore Ravens losing four of their last five games in the regular season and then go on the road and end up winning the Super Bowl and are the Super Bowl Champions, they were the best team they could be by the end of the season and that’s our goal to be the best team we can be at the end of the season and by my estimation I think we are getting better.”

Freshman Josh Gray
On what the difference was for this game

“I think we prepared for it and had more focus and concentration for this game.”

On what the game came down to
“It came down to fifty-fifty balls and just like Jordan said they wanted it more than us.”

On how frustrating it is to loose another game in the last six minutes
“Very frustrating but we have to get back to work and back to practice Thursday and we can’t give up.”

Sophomore Jordan Tolbert
On getting out rebounded by Kansas State

“That was the number 13 team in the nation and I think they were just more hungry than us and wanted it more.”

On Clark Lammert and Luke Adams providing a spark off the bench
“They practice hard everyday and I knew what to expect from them, it was good for us.”

Kansas State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On the overall game
“Hats off to Chris Walker and his staff and the job they’ve done. You know his kids play really hard. That was one thing Coach Chris Lowery had to scout and that he talked about; they will battle and play hard. It’s the first game we’ve won all year and lost our play hard chart. They out toughed us for loose balls and got on the floor deflections, they’re very very active. They’ve been good all year on steals. Today they uncharacteristically actually only turned the ball over four times; and we think we have a pretty good defense. We won, I don’t think it was pretty but, it is better than a loss.”

On rebounding
“We were a real good rebounding team earlier in the year then we went smaller with Shane Southwell and we haven’t been quite as good. Rodney McGruder made an effort and has had some games where he hasn’t scored much. So I told him if they are locking into you and you’re not getting shots go find other ways. Get out in transition and get offensive rebounds. He gets five offensive rebounds and gets to the line a little bit. I told the guys defensive rebounding would be key to the game. They haven’t been a great shooting team even though they shot a little better today. They had great inside presence, Jordan Tolbert was really big inside and even Dejan Kravic. They did a great job posting up deep and getting some things around the basket.”

On the start of the second half
“I didn’t think we were ready to play. We had some fouls in the first half. When you foul that means you’re not in position and not ready and not doing the things you normally do. We have to change that and have more energy and it didn’t happen. We weren’t on our toes and weren’t in the places we need to be and we gave them a couple easy baskets. And for the first time in a long time I thought we took some questionable shots which was disappointing to me."

K-State's Rodney McGruder
On dominating in rebounding tonight

“Coach has been stressing rebounding, day in and day out in practice and our pass game. Since he’s been emphasizing these things we have been trying to attack the boards hard. “

On the coach getting upset early in the second half
“We knew we had to step it up. As he would say ‘get our rear in gear, really focus in on the task at hand and to not lose site.’ We came out kind of sluggish and he just pressured us to take advantage of the opportunities.”

K-State's Angel Rodriguez
On not forcing that many turnovers by Tech

“I thought we didn’t pressure the ball like we usually do. They also did a good job of being under control and letting the game come to them. That’s the reason why coach was getting mad at us because, we weren’t playing as hard as we usually do. Pressuring the ball and playing hard on defense is usually what gets us going.”

K-State's Thomas Gipson
On starting 4 for 4 and getting good looks

“When I was screening they were showing out too hard and I had few easy slips. As well as me being aggressive on the offensive board and getting a few easy put backs.”
