Tolbert Leads Texas Tech Past Angelo State, 65-46|

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech jumped out early and never looked back, while Jordan Tolbert led the way in the second half, as the Red Raiders topped Angelo State, 65-46, Friday in an exhibition game at the United Spirit Arena.
Tolbert, a junior from Fort Worth, finished the night with 12 points and 11 rebounds in 31 minutes of play. He took just five shots from the field, hitting three, including a 3-pointer and added a 5-of-6 performance from the line.
After Kenny Williams gave the Rams a quick 2-0 lead to start the game, Texas Tech went on an 18-2 run to give the Red Raiders an 18-4 lead with 10:34 to play in the first half.
The Red Raiders extended the lead to 18 twice, with the last coming on freshman Randy Onwuasor's layup in the lane to give Tech a 26-8 lead with 4:38 to play in the first half.
Senior Jamal Williams, Jr. gave Texas Tech its largest lead of the game at 19 just before the end of the half, when he converted a four-point play after being fouled on a 3-pointer and then followed with a made free throw. Tech took a 37-18 lead into the half.
Angelo State began chipping away at the Texas Tech lead in the second half, closing to within nine points, 49-40, with 9:48 to play on a Reggie Sutton layup. But then Tolbert took over.
With Texas Tech leading 57-44, Tolbert scored seven of the Red Raiders' final eight points. During that same span, Texas Tech held Angelo State to just two points.
The new hand checking rule was in full effect on Friday night, as the two teams combined to commit 45 fouls and shoot 52 free throws. Texas Tech ended the evening converting 22 of 31 from the line (71 percent, while Angelo State was 15 of 21 (71.4 percent).
The Red Raiders return to action next Friday as they host Houston Baptist in the season opener at 7 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.
