Texas Tech vs. Troy
Coach Billy Gillispie
"It was a great game for us, what crowd to open it up they were fantastic for us and our guys gave everybody a heart attack that was in there, some of the craziest plays I've ever seen, but they are getting tougher and getting more of an edge to them we are understanding how important it is to play in certain situations and we just have to get more consistent with our play. I'm very, very proud, we are improving, still taking baby steps we've got a long ways to go we didn't win a national championship tonight but we played against a team that made everything they shot. So really proud of our team tonight."
On how Tech stopped Troy in the second half
"I guess we slowed them down by letting them drive into the lane and go to the basket more, but they're a hard team to play they have good athletes and that's the thing that's scary about them, we are a help defensive team and so we are going to try and guard the basketball better but we had a few possessions when we did and we are improving every single day but when your in a help position and they have quick athletes so they can drive it, penetrate, and pitch and then all of the sudden your guys get a little bit nervous and so you defense being tight starts to spread out and you don't really trust what we do because of in experience and those shots going in right at the start and so they have a greater chance to drive past you. We tried to contest shots, we contested a lot of shots that they made early in the game, what we needed to do going into the game was we needed to get to finish plays and we needed to rebound and if we would've done those things we would've had a wide margin of victory, we didn't do those things so we have to do a much better job doing those areas, but they were hard to guard, they have a very good guard, I think he's supposed to be an all-conference player and they some new guys that shoot it without conscious and when they start going in you know it's a vey difficult team to play, but again I'm very proud of our guys, we made a lot of mistakes but it's November 11, so you expect that but they made a lot of big plays down the stretch when the game was on the line and I was very proud of them."
On how Ty Nurse played
"He was huge, he made everything he shot but it wasn't just about the ball going in, maybe that's where he gained his confidence from because he has not been playing very confidently he's trying to figure out what I want him to do instead of just playing basketball like he knows how to play. Ty's a champion his team finished second in the national tournament last year every time you see him play his team wins in a pick-up situation, he hasn't played very well in the exhibition games because again I've got him messed up a little bit but tonight I think he just relaxed a played and he made a ton of big plays, as many big baskets as he made on the other end but our press offense we have got to get more guys working to get open, but Ty was consistent with his effort and if he wouldn't have worked as hard to get the ball in we wouldn't have won the game."
Junior Ty Nurse
On getting a win to open the season
"It is a great start to the season. We have a bunch of new guys and a new coach, so it is definitely good to get this win under our belt and now we can just move forward and focus on our next game."
On his three-point shot
"I have been working on that my whole life."
On Troy's performance
"They went hard, but we go very hard in practice and we practice very hard. Conditioning is something that coach Gillispie tries to make sure it is not a factor in games. I think we were pretty good."
On his performance against Troy
"Coach Gillispie has been getting on me about defensive rebounds and I just saw it in the air, and I knew I had to go get it and I saw they didn't have anyone back because they like to offensive rebound a lot. So I wanted to push it and I knew the guy was on my back, so I was able to finish the play."
Senior Robert Lewandowski
On Ty Nurse's three-point shot
"Ty has always had a three ball, he just likes to hide it."
On the team's performance against Troy
"It is a win. That is about the most positive thing we can take out of it. I thank the Lord everyday for the opportunity to play. We have a lot of good pieces. Obviously Ty (Nurse), it seems like every day, every game there is a new player that kind of surprises us. Ty was the surprise tonight, at least for the fans. We all know Ty can step up and play that way every day. We just need a more balanced attack I think. We have to crash the boards. We are not doing a very good job on the boards. I think there is a lot we can take out of it but, like Ty said, it is a win. We are going to celebrate tonight and get back to work tomorrow."
On not having a back up adding pressure to his game
"As much pressure as I allow it to be. It is one of those things where it is a mentality thing. If I step up and I don't let it bother me, like Ty said, conditioning and things like that that usually take you out. Foul trouble and those type of things, we try and control those. Conditioning, we work on that everyday in practice. We go hard as heck and foul trouble, sometimes calls just don't go your way. It is one of those things where it is not a lot of pressure. It is something to be mindful of, but I don't feel like it is usually a factor. Also, I think the guys we do have, Tolbert usually does a great job. We both struggled on rebounds tonight, and we are going to work on that tomorrow and everyday coming up. I think he is a great freshman with great potential. Potential is a funny word, it is all in the future. So we just have to keep working. As soon as we get Kader (Tapsoba) back and some of those other guys we will be a little deeper."
