Dec. 17, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas -- Despite a career-high 33 points by John Roberson, UTEP had three players in double figures en route to a 96-78 win over Texas Tech Wednesday at the Don Haskins Center.
After leading the Red Raiders into halftime with a team-high nine points, Roberson exploded in the second half for 24 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Roberson had all of Tech's 3-pointers as the Red Raiders finished 4-for-16 beyond the arc.
Damir Suljagic was the only other Red Raider in double figures as he added 10 points and eight rebounds coming off the bench.
UTEP had three players in double figures as Stefon Jackson dropped 28 points, while Randy Culpepper and Arnett Moultrie added 27 and 15 points, respectively.
Tech was within three points with five minutes remaining in the first half, but UTEP ended the period on a 12-6 run to give the Miners a 43-34 halftime lead.
Tech would match UTEP bucket-for-bucket to start the second half, but Arnett Moultrie's dunk at the 15:16 mark started a 26-10 run for the Miners over the next five minutes to put the game away.
Both teams heated-up in the second half as the Miners shot 62 percent from the field in the period, while Tech connected on 15-of-29 shot attempts.
The Red Raiders also matched their season-high of 18 turnovers, which the Miners turned into 21 points.
The game had only one lead change as the Miners took a 3-2 lead off a Culpepper three-pointer in the game's opening minute.
Tech returns to the United Spirit Arena for the first time since Dec. 3 on Saturday to face New Mexico at noon.
