LAIE, Hawaii - Jayson Mitchell scored only two points for Texas Tech, but they came at the buzzer of the second overtime to give Texas Tech a 78-76 victory Tuesday over Pepperdine in the consolation round of the Pearl Harbor Classic.
Mitchell, who made only 1-of-10 shots, took a missed shot by Mario Layne and hit the game-winner, a 15-foot baseline effort.
With the exception of a good start by Pepperdine (6-5), the game was close all the way with neither team able to break away. A 16-6 run, with backup guards Jevon Banks and Mario Layne leading the way, put the Red Raiders (7-4) back in the game in the first half.
Cliff Owens put together 11 straight points during a 6-minute stretch of the second half to put the Red Raiders in position to tie it at 66 at the end of regulation.
Jelani Gardner scored seven of Pepperdine's points in the first extra period, but Andy Ellis countered with four for the Red Raiders to make it 74-74 and send the game into the second extra period.
A steal by Mitchell led to a layup by Layne, but Kelvin Gibbs countered with 2-of-4 free throws to tie the game and set the stage for Mitchell's game-winner.
Owens was the top scorer with 18 points to go with a career-high 18 rebounds, while Ellis and Banks each added 11 points.
The Waves got 17 points from David Lalazarian, but their inability to convert free throws hurt them. They made only 19-of-36, while outscoring Texas Tech from the floor, 28-26.
