Texas Tech Overwhelms Mount St. Mary's, 100-69|
December 30, 2013
It was the 750th career game coached by Tubby Smith, who has coached at Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota and Texas Tech. He is now 519-231 all-time.
Julian Norfleet scored 16 points for the Mountaineers (3-9), while Khalid Nwandu added 15 points and Rashad Whack finished with 11.
Texas Tech secured its first lead of the game (6-5) after a layup by Gotcher with 17:32 left in the first half sparked a decisive run. Gotcher's layup was the beginning of a 21-2 run for the Red Raiders that lasted until Whack sank a 3-pointer with 10:29 left in the first half to make it 25-10.
The Red Raiders shot a scorching 63.3 percent from the field. It is the 16th top total in program history and the highest shooting percentage since shooting 64.2 percent at Iowa State on Feb. 10, 2003.
It was also a night that saw Texas Tech convert 18 of 21 from the line for 85.7 percent. It marked the ninth straight game that the Red Raiders had shot 70 percent or better from the free throw line. The last time Texas Tech converted 70 percent or better from the line for nine straight games was during the 2006-07 season.
With the non-conference portion of the schedule coming to a close, Texas Tech will open Big 12 play on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena against the undefeated Iowa State Cyclones (12-0).
