LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Texas Tech overcame a slow start to defeat Nevada 70-53 Wednesday night behind 15 points by Mario Layne and 14 by Johnny Phillips.

Nevada (4-5) scored the game's first nine points and led 15-8 at the 12:48 mark, but the Red Raiders (8-5) went on an 8-0 run in a stretch of less than two minutes to pull ahead 16-15 with 11 minutes left in the half.

Andre McLeod had 13 points and John Burrell 11 to lead Nevada.

Tech led 35-31 at the half and pulled away with a 13-5 flurry after intermission, opening a 48-36 lead with 11:33 remaining.

Nevada scored six straight points to get within 48-42 with just under 10 minutes to play, but that was as close as the Wolfpack got because Tech went on a six-point run of its own.

In the second half, Texas Tech shot 65 percent from the field and outrebounded Nevada 26-9.
