Texas Tech Defeats Arkansas Express in Exhibition Action
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raider basketball team defeated the Arkansas Express by a score of 70-59 in their first of two preseason exhibition games Thursday night at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
Tech trailed the Express through much of the game, but with 13:44 remaining in the second half Stan Bonewitz found Cliff Owens with a behind the head pass which Owens converted to a slam dunk to establish the teamis first lead. The dunk came in the midst of a 12-0 run that gave the Raiders control of the game.
Following the game Owens attributed Techis slow start to a lack of familiarity among a new group of starters. iI think it had mainly to do with chemistry,i Owens said. iWe really have to work on playing together. We havenit done a whole lot of that. But we got some bugs out tonight and this is as good a place to do that as any.i
Owens had 16 points and 8 rebounds on the game. Cory Carr led the Raiders in scoring with a game high 18 points. But it was Bonewitz who gave the Raiders the lift they needed in the second half. The junior guard finished the game with 14 points and 8 assists while shooting four of six from three point range, and sunk a pair of three-point shots in the crucial stretch of the game. iStanley is the only player who even played near as well as he is capable of,i Tech Coach James Dickey said. iI was really proud of the way we competed in the second half. We really played hard and it was Stan who got us going.i
The Red Raiders finish their exhibition schedule on Monday, November 17, versus Conoco Basketball at Municipal Coliseum. Tech will open the regular season on Saturday, November 22 at SMU.
