Red Raiders Rally to Defeat Conoco Basketball 82-68
LUBBOCK, Texas - After trailing 48-35 at the half the Red Raider basketball team rallied in the opening minutes of the second half and went on to defeat Conoco Basketball 82-68 in the team's final exhibition game of the preseason at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum on Monday night. Tech's defensive play in the first five minutes of the second half keyed a 16-2 run that enabled the Raiders to take their first lead since the 18:30 mark of the first half. Cory Carr scored 11 of his game high 24 points during that stretch as Tech climbed back into the game against a talented Conoco team.
"In the second half we battled and some good things began to happen defensively," Red Raider Coach James Dickey said. "I felt like when we made that run we would win the game." Tech would again fall behind midway through the second half, but a three pointer by Carr and a tip in by Ross Carmichael helped to reestablish a Raider lead and Brock Barnes scored all of his eight points in the final 3:53 of the game to lock up the win for Texas Tech. "We really had open shots the whole game," Barnes said. "They just didn't start going down until the second half." Stan Bonewitz was just three assists shy of a triple-double in the game as he scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Rayford Young and Carmichael also scored in double figures with 18 and 10 points respectively.
Texas Tech will open the regular season on the road at SMU on Saturday and return to Lubbock for their home opener on Tuesday, November 25 against TCU.
