Texas Tech Storms Back, Beats Nevada 99-94
RENO, Nev. - Cory Carr scored 31 points and Texas Tech overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to beat Nevada 99-94 in overtime Saturday night.
Rayford Young had a career-high 28 points and eight assists for Texas Tech (5-4), including two free throws with 4.4 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 72 and send the game into overtime.
Paul Culbertson scored 22 points and David Morgan and Robin Kennedy had 20 each for Nevada (4-4), which never led in the overtime after trailing only once - by 2-0 - in regulation.
An offensive rebound by Cliff Owens and a 3-point goal by Stan Bonewitz, who finished with 15 points, gave Texas Tech a 77-72 lead in the first 36 seconds of overtime.
Carr made two 3-pointers in overtime, giving him five for the game, and Texas Tech made its last 16 free throws - four in regulation and 12 in overtime. The Red Raiders finished 21-for-26 from the line.
The Wolf Pack led 45-28 at halftime as Culbertson scored 12 points and helped hold Carr, the Big 12 Conference's leading scorer at 22.8 points a game, to nine.
Texas Tech was outrebounded 23-11 and had only two offensive rebounds in the first half, but finished with only a 38-35 rebounding deficit.
The Red Raiders scored the first eight points of the second, but didn't tie the game until 5:14 remained when Carr hit a 10-foot floater for a 61-61 tie.
With 1:01 left, Carr hit a 3-pointer to bring Texas Tech with 72-70. After Kennedy missed, Ross Carmichael rebounded for the Red Raiders. Young was followed by Lamont Allen while shooting a jumper, and converted both his free throws to send the game into overtime.
Morgan had eight rebounds in the first half and 12 in the game for Nevada.
