Men's Basketball to Play at Pearl Harbor Classic|
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University men's basketball team will play in the inaugural eight-team Pearl Harbor Classic Basketball Tournament next season, Brigham Young University-Hawaii announced today.
The Red Raiders will be making the Holiday trip with the Texas Tech women's team. The Lady Raiders will play in the University of Hawaii's Ala Moana Paradise Classic women's basketball tournament which will feature Texas Tech, Hawaii, James Madison and Loyola Marymount.
A five-night travel package will be available to Texas Tech fans from Friday through Wednesday, Dec. 18-23. Reservation information can be obtained by contacting Kay Nelson of Excel Travel, (806) 798-5999 or (800) 687-8111.
The first Pearl Harbor Classic Men's Basketball Tournament will be played Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 21-23 on the campus of BYU-Hawaii. Head coach James Dickey's team will play three games beginning with Tulsa on Monday, Dec. 21. Texas Tech will face either Michigan State or Pepperdine in its second game on Dec. 22. The eight-team field will also include Alabama, BYU-Hawaii, Oregon State and Weber State.
"We think we can make our tournament one of the very finest tournaments in the country," BYU-Hawaii athletic director Ken Wagner said. "BYU-Hawaii wants to give something more to the teams than just the chance to play some basketball games. We want them to enjoy a full Hawaii experience here. We plan to make the Pearl Harbor Classic the most unique historical and cultural experience of any tournament in the country."
Texas Tech posted a 13-14 record last season and tied for seventh in the Big 12 Conference with a 7-9 mark. The Red Raiders will feature four returning starters with senior Stan Bonewitz and junior Rayford Young as all-star candidates at guard, junior Cliff Owens at forward and sophomore Johnny Phillips at center.
