Tech Student-Athletes Named to Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team|
Texas Tech had 10 of its athletics programs represented

LUBBOCK, Texas - Thirty-three Texas Tech student-athletes were named to the inaugural Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team, the league office announced Thursday afternoon.
The award is given to new, incoming freshmen at their respective league institution. Overall 383 student-athletes from the Big 12 were recognized with 22 freshmen recording a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Texas Tech was represented by 10 of its athletics programs, including eight student-athletes from the track and field/cross country teams and with six selections on both the baseball and soccer teams. The Red Raiders also had representatives from the softball (4), volleyball (4), women's basketball (2), women's tennis (2) and men's basketball (1) programs.
Leading the way in the classroom for the group of freshmen were soccer student-athlete Meghan Mitchell (Human Development and Family Studies - Georgetown, Texas), softball student-athlete Samantha Camello (General Studies - Temecula, Calif.) and track and field student-athlete Shelby Poncik (Political Science - Needville, Texas) who all posted 4.0 GPA's during their first year at Tech.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the 2012-13 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshman that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00. Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team's scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
