July 8, 2013
"Mark brings a lot of experience," said Smith. "He is well respected throughout college basketball at every level. He grew up and has lived in the Lubbock area all of his life, outside of the time he has spent coaching elsewhere. We are excited to have him onboard.
"His job will involve many hats. This is a transition for him. This will be a different job description for Mark, but we think he is up for the challenge."
Adams, who led Howard to the 2010 NJCAA National Championship, has won 11 different coach of the year honors. He has served as head coach at Clarendon College (1982-83), Wayland Baptist (1984-87), West Texas A&M (1987-92), Texas-Pan American (1992-97) and Howard College (2005-13). He has a career coaching record of 448-229.
"I am extremely excited and honored on so many levels," said Adams. "I have the opportunity to work with Tubby Smith, come back to my alma mater and be closer to my family."
A 1979 graduate of Texas Tech, Mark and his wife Jennifer are the parents of Luke and Abbie. Luke is junior guard on the Red Raider basketball team, who has lettered for the past two seasons. His daughter Abbie is also a graduate student at Texas Tech.
Coming off of his third 30-win season at Howard after winning the Western Junior College Athletic Conference, Adams has finished first or second in Region V in each of the last nine seasons. He has also recorded 233 wins at the Big Spring junior college since arriving in 2004 and advanced to the regional tournament for nine consecutive years.
During his 23 seasons as a head coach, he has advanced to the postseasons 14 times and reached the national tournament of each school's respective classification eight times (three NJCAA, two NCAA Division II and three NAIA), including leading Wayland Baptist to the NAIA National Final in 1985.
