LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech men's and women's basketball coaches, staff and players volunteered at Race for the Cure on Saturday outside the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, helping to fight the battle against breast cancer.

For Texas Tech women's basketball head coach Kristy Curry and her players, the cause was a little more personal this year. The Lady Raiders volunteered their early Saturday morning to brave the cold and be out in support of Tomi Calmes, a longtime Lady Raider fan who is battling breast cancer.

"I was overwhelmed at first," Calmes said. "I know I have breast cancer. But when I came out here and saw all the people who were `Team Tomi,' then I realized that I do have breast cancer but that I am a fighter and I am going to survive."

Calmes touched on what it has been like to work with the women's basketball program in coming together for Saturday's event and how amazed she has been at the support from coach Curry and her staff, who were out at Race for the Cure for her and others Saturday morning.

"We're doing this for Miss Tomi, for Kelsi Baker's mom, for Jordan Murphree's mom and there's just so many people in our program have been affected by this disease," Curry said. "We're just proud to be out this morning. You think about Play for Kay, and us participating in that during the conference portion of our season and we're just proud to be out this morning for a great cause."

And right with the women's basketball team were the Red Raider men's basketball team, dressed in their pink t-shirts and ready to high five the walkers and take pictures with everyone as they went through the race.

"It means everything to be out here today," Tech men's basketball interim head coach Chris Walker said. "We're serving a cause greater yourself. That's a big priority in our program. We want our guys to understand that giving back is very significant and they need to learn that by doing it every time that we have an opportunity."
