Texas Tech Men's Basketball Plays First Exhibition Tuesday

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University men's basketball team plays the first of two exhibition games on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in Lubbock Municipal Coliseum against Arkansas Express.

Arkansas Express has won two of its four exhibition games in November. The Express beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the team's opener (57-56) and defeated Southeastern Louisiana (60-51). Arkansas Express has dropped contests at Saint Louis (45-42) and Mississippi State (63-49).

Head coach James Dickey, beginning his eighth season at Texas Tech, returns four starters from last season's 13-14 squad. Senior Stan Bonewitz (San Antonio, Texas), juniors Cliff Owens (Santa Fe, Texas) and Rayford Young (Pampa, Texas), and sophomore Johnny Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas) are back from last year after starting the majority of the season for the Red Raiders.

Junior Mario Layne (Wildey, St. Michael, Barbados) is expected to be the fifth starter for the Red Raiders in their exhibition opener. Layne transferred to Texas Tech from South Plains College.

Other Texas Tech newcomers to watch include freshman center Andy Ellis (Lamesa, Texas), sophomore guard Jevon Banks (Las Vegas, Nev.), sophomore forward Jayson Mitchell (Tyler, Texas), junior guard James Ware (Minneapolis, Minn.), and junior forward Brodney Kennard (Fort Worth, Texas).

The Red Raiders will play another exhibition against Global Sports Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Coliseum.
