LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech University men's basketball team opens the 1998-99 regular season Thursday at 7:00 p.m. against Texas-San Antonio (1-0) in Lubbock Municipal Coliseum.
The Red Raiders, who posted a 1-1 mark in two exhibition games, return five letter winners, including starters Stan Bonewitz (San Antonio, Texas), Cliff Owens (Santa Fe, Texas), Johnny Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas) and Rayford Young (Pampa, Texas).
UT-San Antonio won its opening game over Ouachita Baptist last Sunday, 79-48, behind 20 points from freshman Devin Brown. The Red Raiders have won three of the four meetings over the UTSA Roadrunners, including a 99-51 win in Lubbock two years ago.
The 1998-99 regular season, which will feature 15 home games for the men's squad, will mark the final campaign for Texas Tech basketball in Lubbock Municipal Coliseum. The Red Raiders move into the United Spirit Arena next season.
Bonewitz and Young highlight Texas Tech's '98-99 edition, which will feature eight newcomers. Bonewitz has been among the best passers and shooters in the first two years of the Big 12 Conference. He finished second in three-point percentage (41.8) in the Big 12 last year while averaging 12.9 points per game.
Young is Texas Tech's leading returning scorer with 15.4 points per game. He led the Red Raiders last season in assists (116) and steals (46). He finished second in the Big 12 behind teammate Cory Carr with an 84.3 free throw percentage.
