Texas Tech Vying For Return To Win Column

Texas Tech (5-3) will try and snap a two-game losing streak as it hosts Arizona State (9-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the United Spirit Arena.

It is the ninth straight home game in a series of 11 in a row the Red Raiders will play at the United Spirit Arena before hitting the road for the first time on Jan. 5 when they face new conference member TCU.

Saturday’s game renews an old Border Conference rivalry that began in 1934. The Red Raiders hold the advantage in the series, 21-19, but the Sun Devils have won the last four meetings. The last meeting came at the Lubbock Coliseum on Dec. 8, 1988, when Arizona State left Lubbock with an 81-75 win over Texas Tech.

The Red Raiders’ last win over the Sun Devils came on Jan. 12, 1957, in Lubbock, as Leon “Pod” Hill had 25 points and Ned Underwood added 17 points to lead Texas Tech to an 85-68 victory.

Saturday’s matchup features two up-tempo offenses, as the Red Raiders averaged 78.0 points per game and the Sun Devils averaged 75.7 points per game.

The Red Raiders (5-3) are paced by one of the nation’s top sixth men in Jaye Crockett, who comes off the bench each night to contribute a team best 16.4 points and 8.9 rebounds a night. Forward Dejan Kravic added 10.1 points and 4.9 rebounds, while freshman guard Josh Gray chips in 11.5 points and 2.8 assists and sophomore forward Jordan Tolbert is good for 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds a game.

Arizona State’s starters produce 84 percent of its offense. They are led by freshman Jahii Carson, who is averaging 17.9 points and 5.4 assists a game. He is joined in the rotation by Carrick Felix (15.1 ppg/7.5 rpg), Evan Gordan (11.4 ppg/3.2 rpg), Jordan Bachynski (10.6 ppg/7.5 rpg) and Jonathan Gilling (8.6 pph/7.5 rpg).
