Texas Tech 23, Penn State 24 September 9, at State College, Pa. Attendance: 96,034 There almost was no joy in State College as only a few inches separated underdog Texas Tech from registering a major upset in front of the largest crowd ever to see the Raiders play. It took a 39-yard field goal by Brett Conway that narrowly crossed through the right side with four seconds left to allow Penn State to escape with a 24-23 victory before 96,034 fans and an ABC-TV audience. The pesky Red Raiders simply refused to go away after the Nittany Lions took their first lead of the game (21-20) on a short touchdown pass. Tony Rogers rifled through a 42-yard kick with 6:39 and the nation's No. 4-ranked team was on the ropes until the last-second field goal. A swarming Texas Tech defense caused all kinds of havoc as the Raiders grabbed a 20-7 halftime lead. Freshman Montae Reagor caused a fumble and linebacker Shawn Banks recovered in the end zone for Tech's first touchdown. Zebbie Lethridge hit on a couple of TD passes after Tech's special teams caused fumbles on punt returns.
