Texas Tech 45, SMU 14 November 18, at Dallas Texas Attendance: 11,738 With a possible bowl bid burning brightly, Texas Tech rode the SMU Mustangs hard and put 'em up wet. The Raiders sprinted out to a 35-0 lead early in the second quarter before settling for a 45-14 victory in the last SWC game in the Cotton Bowl. Byron Hanspard had a career day -- tying school records for single-game touchdowns (five) and touchdown receptions (three). He paced a 378-yard ground attack that left the Ponies panting. Hanspard accounted for 180 yards rushing and another 80 yards in receiving in helping Texas Tech assure its best record in six years. Zach Thomas, who learned earlier in the week that he was a Butkus Award finalist, got the Raiders going early by returning a pass interception 34 yards to set up the game's score. The defenders notched five takeaways on the day and registered 13 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. SMU could convert just two of 13 third-down situations. Zebbie Lethridge had a career-high 83 yards rushing.
