Texas Tech 7, Texas 48 November 4, at Austin Texas Attendance: 77,809 In what turned out to be the only disappointing showing of the season, the No. 23-ranked Red Raiders ran into a buzzsaw in Austin and came out on the short end of a 48-7 score to the No. 13-ranked Texas Longhorns. The loss knocked Texas Tech out of title contention and out of the national rankings. Long-time UT observers called Texas' performance the school's best in at least five years. Zebbie Lethridge saw his SWC record string of passes without an interception end at 211 when his third attempt was picked off in the first quarter. The 'Horns went on to score a touchdown shortly thereafter, pushing Tech behind 14-0. The Raiders had three chances of getting back into the contest in the second quarter but came up empty. A stray snap ruined a 50-yard field goal attempt, a run came up short of a first down on a fake field goal and Shawn Hurd had the ball stripped from him after a near interception near the UT end zone. Texas wound up scoring 28 points off four Tech turnovers.
