Coaches Review The Battle . . .
Texas Tech Head Coach Spike Dykes:
(On the loss): "I tell you it cuts my heart out when we lose a game
like that. Texas has a good team. We hoped our defense could hold
them, but they couldn't make the plays when they had to. Texas had
percission and kept us off balance. We had our chances but just
couldn't get it done. When the score was 28-3, it looked like the end
of the world. Mitchell and Brown are good players. We had a lot of
penalties that haunted us. Texas made the plays when they had to. All
our guys could do was hang in there. The team has a lot of football
left, and we are going to have to bounce back to get our chance at a
bowl game."
Texas Head Coach John Mackovic:
(On the win): "You probably saw one of the big shootouts of 1996. I am
proud of the way UT held on to the momentum. It is another step in
indication of our team. First of all our defense was quite a factor.
We did a good job of holding Byron Hanspard, a national rushing leader.
Second, the offense did well against a nationally ranked defense in four
defensive catagories. It puts us at the top of the Southern Division.
James Brown showed us tonight what he is able to do. I felt the most
significant part of the game were the 16 plays of 95 yards. We ran the
clock down and that drive continued to extend the lead. Our team was
ready to play. Playing against someone who is a top rusher in the
nation (Byron Hanspard) I guess you will be fired up."
