Hanspard Continues To Receive National Acclaim

LUBBOCK, Texas -- Junior Heisman Trophy candidate Byron Hanspard continues to compile national awards considerations when he was listed among the five finalists for the Football News 1996 Offensive Player of the Year award, the publication announced Friday.
Hanpsard is one of two players from the Big 12 Conference who are being considered for the award and, along with Iowa State junior Troy Davis, is one of two running backs included on the list. The finalists for the award are: Orlando Pace, OL, Ohio State; Hanspard; Steve Sarkisian, QB, Brigham Young; Danny Wuerffel, QB, Florida; and Davis.
The finalists were chosen from an original list of 30 semi-finalists selected by the editors of Football News on Oct. 30. The official announcement of the award will be made on Friday, Nov. 30. The honoree wil be officially recognized at a press conference in Detroit, Mich. in mid-January and will be honored at the National Athletic Awards ceremony in Detroit on Feb. 3.
The publication also selected five finalists for the Defensive Player of the Year award: Mike Vrabel, DE, Ohio State; Peter Boulward, DE, Florida State; Canute Curtis, LB, West Virginia; Jason Chorak, LB, Washington; Grant Wistrom, DE, Nebraska.
