Texas Tech Announces Football Schedule
Red Raiders to play six home games in Jones Stadium
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech released its official football schedule today, which features the earliest season-opener in school history, three opponents that played in alliance bowls a year ago and six home games in Jones Stadium.
When the Red Raiders travel to Knoxville, Tenn. to face Payton Manning and the Tennessee Volunteers on August 30, it will mark the earliest season-opener in 72 seasons of Texas Tech football. The previous earliest start was last season's August 31st matchup at Kansas State in the first-ever Big 12 Conference football game.
Texas Tech opponents Nebraska, Texas and Kansas State all played in Alliance Bowls a year ago, while Tennessee defeated Northwestern 48-28 in the Florida Citrus Bowl. Texas lost to Penn State in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Nebraska defeated Virginia Tech in the Fed Ex Orange Bowl and Kansas State fell to Brigham Young in the Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl.
Texas Tech will play six home games within the friendly confines of Jones Stadium this season, with its home opener coming against last season's final home opponent Southwestern Louisiana. Tech will also face North Texas, Kansas, Texas A&M, Kansas State and Oklahoma. The Kansas contest on Oct. 11 will be Texas Tech's homecoming, while the Kansas State game on Nov. 1 has been designated Family Day.
"I think the schedule we have this season is the kind that will really challenge our football team," said Red Raider head coach Spike Dykes, who is entering his record-tying 11th season at Texas Tech. "We open up with a great football team on the road where we have everything to gain and nothing to lose. I think we have a very strong home schedule that our fans should really enjoy."
Tech's first three games will feature a 6:30 p.m. start time, while the final three are scheduled to kick-off at 1 p.m. All game times are subject to change for television purposes. Those determinations will be made by the networks during the summer for the first two weeks of the season. Beyond the first two games, television time changes will be announced by the Big 12 Conference on a 12-day or 6-day advance basis.
