Texas Tech Tops Baylor, 35-14
WACO, Texas - Zebbie Lethridge threw two touchdowns passes while running for another and Dane Johnson returned a punt 47 yards for a touchdown as Texas Tech defeated Baylor, 35-14, in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.
The Red Raiders led 7-0 midway through the second quarter when Johnson fielded the punt from Matt Bryant at the Baylor 47 and raced down the right sideline for the touchdown. They had last returned a punt for a score when Johnson did it against Southern Methodist on September 24th, 1994.
After a scoreless first quarter, Texas Tech (2-2, 1-0 Big 12) got on the board 7:45 into the second period on Lethridge's one-yard quarterback sneak.
Just 71 seconds later, Baylor (-3, 0-1) got its only score of the first half when Jeff Watson found running back Jerod Douglas for a 66-yard scoring strike. But Lethridge hit Donnie Hart for a 68-yard score just 65 seconds thereafter, giving Texas Tech a 21-7 halftime lead.
Lethridge again found Hart with a 24-yard scoring strike 9:38 into the third period. Backup Rob Peters connected with Malcolm McKenzie 7:18 into the fourth quarter to cap the scoring for the Red Raiders.
Watson hit Morris Anderson for an eight-yard TD with two seconds to play.
