The defensive line experienced a great deal of success during Ron Harris’ first season and flourished again last year. Harris’ line was part of a Texas Tech defense that ranked among the nation’s best during the 2001 season.

Among his pupils at Texas Tech have been Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Kris Kocurek and defensive end Devin Lemons, who earned a spot on the Chicago Bear’s roster in 2001.

A former head coach at Western New Mexico University in 1995, Harris came to Texas Tech from Paradise Valley High School in Phoenix, Ariz., where he served as offensive coordinator for two seasons and defensive coordinator for two seasons.

Harris coached alongside current Tech defensive coordinator Greg McMackin at Navy and Utah, handling defensive linemen, linebackers and defensive backs for the Midshipmen from 1992-94 and tutoring defensive backs at Utah during the 1990-91 seasons.

Prior to joining McMackin at Utah, Harris was the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Glendale (Ariz.) Community College from 1988-89 and defensive line coach at Northern Arizona from 1986-87. The 1998 GCC team won the NJCAA National Championship.

Harris began his coaching career at the high school level, having coached at Moorpark (Calif.) High School in 1981 and Westlake High School in Southern California in 1982-83. From there he moved to Phoenix and had stints at Horizon High School in 1984 and Paradise Valley High School in 1985.

Harris played collegiately at Cal Lutheran as a center from 1977-80. He earned two undergraduate degrees from the school in 1980.

Harris was married over the summer to the former Melissa Fouts.
