KICKING OFF

SMU won the toss and elected to defer. Texas Tech received the ball and SMU defended the north endzone. Texas Tech scored on its opening drive for the first time this season.

OPENING DRIVE SCORING

Texas Tech scored its first opening drive points of the season on a 45-yard Robert Treece field goal following a 3:03, nine-play, 44-yard drive. The field goal also is a career-long for Treece. His previous long was 42 yards.

GETTING STARTING NODS

Three players made their first career start in the game against SMU. Jon Rodriguez (left guard), Raymond Pierce (free safety) and Josh Page (defensive tackle) all made their first career starts.

KINGSBURY SURPASSES HALL FOR ALL-TIME PASSING LEADER

Senior quarterback Kliff Kingsbury surpassed Robert Hall in the third quarter on an 18-yard strike to Armon Dorrough to become Texas Tech's all-time leading passer. Kingbury entered the game with SMU needing 156 yards to surpass Hall's mark of 7,908 and left Gerald J. Ford Stadium with 369 yards to give him a career total of 8,122.

With 8,020 yards of total offense in the game, Kingsbury surpassed Nebraska's Eric Crouch for second place on the all-time career total offense list in the Big 12 Conference. He also passed Zebbie Lethridge (7,690 - 1994-97) for second on Tech's all-time toal offense list.

BIG 12 IS A HIT

In the short history of the new Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the SMU campus, the Big 12 Conference has accounted for the only two sellouts. The first sellout came in the opening game on Sept. 2, 2000 when the Mustangs played Kansas. The attendance at tonight's SMU/Texas Tech game was 32,000. SMU was aided in the sellout by a large Texas Tech contingent estimated at over 17,000.
