LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech held an 80-play scrimmage on Saturday at the grass practice fields southeast of Jones SBC Stadium. The offense and defense both stood out as the defense totaled five sacks during the scrimmage. Quarterback B.J. Symons logged 277 yards through the air and completed three touchdown passes, while wide receiver Carlos Francis led all receivers with 146 yards on four catches, including an 85-yard pass for a score from Symons.

Symons led the way for the quarterbacks, completing 15-of-26 passes. Sonny Cumbie, working with the second team, completed 9-of-14 for 102 yards and touchdown. Splitting time with Cumbie, Cody Hodges threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns.

Aside from Francis, wide receiver Trey Haverty also turned in a solid afternoon performance with six catches for 112 yards, including a 30-yard scoring strike from Hodges. Redshirt freshman Jarrett Hicks caught four passes for 64 yards and led all receivers with two touchdowns. Thomas Bachman and Nehemiah Glover also had touchdown catches on the day.

Running back Taurean Henderson led the ground attack with 69 yards and a touchdown on six carries, while Johnnie Mack carried four times for 23 yards.

Defensively, linebacker John Saldi continued where he left off last season with six tackles, a pass breakup and a sack. Redshirt freshman defensive back Micah Sweats also had six tackles, while free safety Vincent Meeks logged five tackles, a pass breakup and a sack. Redshirt freshman linebacker Fletcher Session had the lone interception of the day, when he picked Hodges on the seventh play of the third series.

The Red Raiders will hold another scrimmage next Saturday at 10 a.m.
