Defense Rises in Saturday Scrimmage
April 12, 2003
LUBBOCK, Texas - Senior QB B.J. Symons completed 5-of-6 for 111 yards on the final series of Saturday's scrimmage after struggling throughout the first two series of the day, while the defense held Tech quarterbacks to 232 less yards than a week ago. Tech, working out in its final scrimmage of the spring season at the football practice facility, ran through a 60-play workout in preparation for next Saturday's Red-Black Game at Jones SBC Stadium. Defensively, the Red Raiders logged six sacks, including 1-½ sacks by third-team DB Brandon Lathan. Lathan and DB Greg Aycock blitzed QB Sonny Cumbie on the ninth play of the fifth series for the sack, and Lathan followed with a solo sack on the next play. DB Ivory McCann led all players with five tackles and a pass breakup, followed by LB John Saldi, who posted three tackles and a sack. Tech's defense allowed 510 passing yards a week ago, but applied pressure much of the morning to the Red Raider quarterbacks, limiting the unit's offensive output. DE Gathan McGinnis had the only interception of the day. McGinnis rushed from the left side and batted Symon's pass before hauling it in for the pick. Symons was 0-of-5 with an interception before completing his first pass of the day and battled defensive blitzes and pressure much of the morning. Symons finished the day with 148 yards on 11-of-22 passing, but was 6-of-16 prior to the final series. Sophomore QB Cody Hodges played two series, passing for 92 yards and completing 6-of-13 passes. Symons recorded two touchdown strikes on the day with a 20-yard pass to RB Taurean Henderson and a 13-yard effort to WR Nehemiah Glover. Hodges hit IR Thomas Bachman on a 19-yard scoring pass. The running game stepped up with 110 yards, led by RB Johnnie Mack's 63 yards on three carries, including a 50-yard touchdown run. RB Taurean Henderson followed with 27 yards on two carries. Texas Tech will wrap up spring drills with the annual Red-Black Game Sat., April 19. The Alumni Game will kick off at noon (CT), followed by the Red-Black Game at 1 p.m. SCRIMMAGE STATISTICS
